Lightweight battery - what have you used as a "holder"

Hi All

I've just installed an Odyssey PC680 battery within the offside battery box in my "sport purpose" hot rod (1972 car, 3.2L engine, hi-torque starter FWIW). This has yielded a weight saving of about 16kg (35Lbs) which is very worthwhile. Yes.....I am a little circumspect that this has the 'oomph" for everyday driving but I'm heartened by the many folk on the impact bumper forum (and elsewhere) who swear this is sufficient .

My question relates to position and securing/holding the battery in place. Whilst I have secured safely temporarily, it isn't a neat permanent solution - what have people used and how did they position the battery (in the existing battery box)?

The existing battery holders by the likes of Rennline http://www.rennline.com/Lightweight-Bat ... EL36V3.38/ and Odyssey http://www.odysseybattery.com/hold_down_kits.aspx do not appear to permit the battery to be mounted upright as there will not be sufficient head height in the battery box. Equally they don't' appear to permit the battery to lie down as access to terminals is compromised.

What have folks here done? I would like to keep it in the battery box to avoid re-routing wires, drilling elsewhere etc.

I used a PC680 in a couple of my early 911's & my 904 - in each case I fabricated a simple folded battery holder from sheet aluminium.

In the 911's I relocated them to the smuggler's box.

I located battery in smugglers box using Rennline kit- works fine and looks good!
LHD car though

RHD smugglers box considerably smaller than that of a LHD car. Presume Magnum has RHD ?

Can’t help re: mounting, but I have two of these batteries - one in my e36 (3.0 in-line 6, 11:1 compression ratio) and another in my z4 (3.2 in-line 6, again 10-11:1CR) and it has no issues starting the cars.. the only problem I have is if you leave the ign on or lights or similar the battery dies quite quickly.. also they need leaving on a trickle charger for any length of time but that isn’t really an issue per-se

I have a small one of these in my in frequently used race car with a 3.2.
Starts well but can be slow on cold hill climb mornings.
Never let me down in 3 years.
I do not charge mine at all!
As to mounting, simple sheet alum box and the battery itself is held in with a tight bungee cord.

I know of a GT3 driver who fitted one and took it out as the car used too much current to run alarms etc and failed to start the car at times.
Our cars are simple, so things should be fine.
Weight saving is substantial.

Yes its a RHD and I'd like to beep the battery in the offside battery box (as opposed to smugglers box - less changes to wiring, easier to convert back etc.).

Given my requirement I don't think there is an "off the shelf" solution - I'll make a bespoke holder, prototyped out of cardboard or similar before moving onto the finished product in aluminum flat bar.

Finally nice to hear adiditonal positive feedback to address my "oomph concern"

In preparation of starting some wiring I ordered one of those fancy Odyssey PC 680 Batteries. It is remarkable small, though for some reason it is not as light as I thought it would be...having said that it is alot lighter than the standard battery!

I decided to install it in the smugglers box, and after some research fabricated a bracket. Afew choice cuts, bends and some welds later...along with some footwear grade outsole rubber, it fits great and secure.












The new washer bottle also isn't going anywhere
