Tyre/Tube question please

Post by 100702mark »

I'm fitting 185 70 15 Pirelli CN36 to 1968 original chrome 6x15 wheels. The tyre clearly says must be fitted with inner tube. However, the steel wheels have large valve holes. Mr modern tyre fitter down the road says cant fit tubes because the hole in the rim is too big for the valve, how do others deal with this please? I know if you are fitting tyres that don't need a tube you can put in "fat valves" because the wheels already have these in but how do you deal with this with inner tubes please, is there a fat valve inner tube or is Mr modern tyre fitter wrong and it is acceptable to have a gap around the valve in the rim?

Many thanks

Mark

You can get (or rather your tyre fitter can) plastic adaptors that fit in the hole, effectively reducing the diameter. Well, you used to be able to as I've had them used many times in the past on VWs, etc.

Yes, they're still readily available - I used some recently when having tyres/tubes fitted to a set of steel wheels on my '59 Giulietta Sprint for the same reason ...

Are these new Pirellis ?

The reason I ask is that I had a set of CN36 Cinturatos fitted to my '69 Alfa Spider about 6 months ago - by Longstone Tyres - & they were fitted with valves ...

Thanks all, I managed to track some down on ebay £3.60 for 4.
They are the older ones I believe they have a date code of 2005 and say on the tyre wall must be fitted with tubes. Despite storing them super carefully I'm only really using them for originality purposes, if I'm doing any spirited driving Ill put the minilites on with nice fresh tyres.
