axle shaft removal

just trying to remove the axles from the gearbox on my B

i've released the side plate but it seems reluctant to part company with the main box....should i try levering the side plate away?

also, can't get any grip on the outer bearing to pull that off

Adrian, when I had to rebuild my gearbox and fit a new diff, I remember that you need to remove the side plate that gives the crown wheel it’s pre-load. The axle shafts will come out together, along with the diff carrier and the crown-wheel.

Bearing removal can be difficult without the correct puller. This link advises the problems. Are you following the correct factory manual removal process?

This link will not resolve your problem but might make you aware of thing things that might happen. PRS would know your problem no doubt. Even if you just explained your situation as you have it at the moment they might lead you in the right direction.

The outer rear wheel bearing ought to be the easy bit if you have dismantled things that far. I have done mine this summer, and while I had the box rebuilt by someone else, I just knocked the bearings from the outer axle tubes with conveniently sized piece of wood down the middle of the axle tube.

Putting the bearings back in is a little more tricky as you have to leave them sitting proud of the axle tube, fit the O ring over the outer race, then snug it all up with the seal carrier. Some American idiot had assembled my rear bearing axle seals inside out long before I bought the car leading to gearbox oil all over the parking brake shoes...
