Early 911 Flywheel

Post by chris68 »

The teeth on my flywheel are shot and from memory, I think it's a one piece type i.e. non-removable ring gear. It looks like an ill fitting hi-torque starter has munched the teeth away over a number of years (should have left the old Bosch unit on :crybaby: ).

Does anyone have a good early flywheel for sale?
Can a slightly later flywheel be fitted to '68 2.0 engine? If so, does anyone have a good one for sale?
Is it an option to machine my flywheel to fit the later shrink on ring gear?
Any other options?

Guess I need to start prepping for an engine drop. Might take the opportunity to swop to stainless heat exchangers while I'm at it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Best regards,
Chris

Any '65-'69 911 (production model) 2.0 flywheel will fit.

The later flywheels with the separate ring gear are larger in diameter.

Thanks Andy. An early type it has to be then. Just got to find one now, unless mine can be repaired (which seems remote).

I might be wrong here, but contact Chris at Fenn Lane motorsport as I think he can make new ones if you can't find a good used one.

Good idea, I'll speak to Chris at Fenn Lane if I'm stuck. Don't imagine there are many good early flywheels knocking about these days.

I actually have one spare but I think shipping from Sweden will be costly.

Aren't they available new for reasonable money, or are the repros bad?

The very early flywheels - before engine number 901618 have a different gear pitch diameter to the subsequent flywheels but I would think the chances of finding a good used flywheel of this age is unlikely.

The genuine Porsche flywheel is quite expensive but will be well made.

There are some UK manufactured aftermarket flywheels that are quite poor and simply not worth the money and they will cause some problems.

Sebro in Germany also make an aftermarket part and these seem to be quite good and are around 50% of Porsche's price.

QSC also sell a flywheel that is made in China and they are readily available on EBay in the USA and some of them may make their way to the UK.

We are making a 911R Style Flywheel - This is a little heavier than the very light flywheels fitted to the 906 and has ben patterend from a genuine 911R Component.

We could make stock flywheels but I am not sure there is much demand and we would have to make around 5 units to make it worthwhile.

Many thanks for the responses everyone. All very helpful information, I'm grateful.

I'll drop you a line Chris, or drop over to your Fenn Lane workshop and sort out a way forward. I really need to get to the bottom of why the damage happened in the first place. My car doesn't get a great deal of use and yet the starter has done a terrific job of munching through the teeth in no time. I suspect, as you suggested in an earlier post Chris, that starter throw and the possible need for spacers has something to do with it. Starter pinion diameter and tooth count is the same as the original Bosch unit.

I should host an engine drop party so everyone can come round and mock while I wrestle the thing out.

Best regards,
Chris

I've removed my 911 engine 18 times in 28 years of ownership, and still fight it!

Did you notice on the Design911 description that you may have to change the starter motor to fit their flywheel.
I have a '73 lightweight flywheel off FLM and it is superb, hence the suggestion to contact Chris.
