912 Dynamo problem
Chaps
I'm still struggling to understand what I am doing, have done, wrong, or if there is a more fundamental issue here with my dynamo and pulley
I'll recap....the rear pulley wheel on my dynamo disintegrated on me
I put it down to me having the belt too tight
Replaced it but very bad rumble, removed it all again and saw the new pulley plate had some damage after just a few minutes running
Thought it may have been the hub being damaged when the pulley disintegrated, so I rdered a new hub and another rear plate
Noticed that one of the screws on the face of the dynamo was rubbed away, so spaced the rear pulley when I put it back together
Ran the car for another 5 miles and the rumble at tick over was still there
Ordered a new dynamo as I thought it could be a noisy bearing
Just removed the pulley / hub and once more before fitting the new dynamo but it is already starting to become disfigured, so obviously something is wrong here and it's not the dynamo more likely the way I am spacing the pulley
Perhaps I am fitting the spacers incorrectly
Anyone got a simple diagram of how I should be putting this together as I have only got a Porsche parts diagram?
Thanks in anticipation, oh, and here are some images...https://www.flickr.com/photos/95118177@ ... 2989588934

Re: 912 Dynamo problem
You should have a total of 10 shims.
The shims that aren't used between the pulley halves (to give the correct fan belt tension) must be placed under the nut/washer on the outer pulley half.

Andy, is there a shim behind the rear pulley plate towards the face of the dynamo?

Re: 912 Dynamo problem
The shims need to be either between the pulley halves or on the outside of the outer pulley half (under the nut) - nowhere else.

Re: 912 Dynamo problem
Well it does look like your pulley halve is contacting the generator. I would be tempted to put some shims in there. Perhaps try and then turn by hand? The important bit is the alignment if the crank pulley and generator pulley. Check that.
