(I'm writing a spec for painters, want to check I understand what I've learned from various threads here - thanks to all who have posted info).
In various reference pics of cars with original paint, I see that the floor is grey. Edges of the floor and wheel arches crudely painted black.
Main question: is the grey "raw" stonechip? No primer or paint on top?
In which case, is the paint process like this?:
1) (base seal coats, not for discussion here)
2) Stonechip underneath, and in engine bay and front pan / lower part of luggage compartment
3) Primer - exterior. For luggage compartment and engine bay, this means they get primer on top of stonechip. Underneath is raw grey stonechip.
4) Colour coat - exterior. For luggage compartment and engine bay, this means they get some kind of coat of colour (not for discussion here, I know the level of colour coverage varied over the years).
5) Black satin coat in various areas. Engine bay now has a coat of black on top of the stonechip+primer+colour. Floor edges and wheel arches now have a coat of black on top of raw stonechip (plus overspray of colour coats, I imagine). For my age of car, luggage compartment does not get painted black - last cars with that finish were just before the summer break in 1969.
