Engine cleaning and detailing.

I am shortly going to get my 356SC back from storage and commence a long overdue restoration.
Fortunately it is nor a major job as it is in fairly good nick but some welding is needed on the floor pan, engine and gearbox coming out, brake and suspension overhaul, new carpets and a repaint.
Other than the welding and painting i will be doing all the work myself and i know that when i start the work this list might escalate. I have had the car for 13 years done little on it other than driving it and servicing so am prepared for whatever it takes.
One area that i want to get right is the engine bay. I know that a bit of gunk and a pressure wash will get most of the gunge off the engine but i really want to get the crankcase, carburetors and
stackpipes really clean and polished.
Can anyone recommend any cleaning products that will get rid of the discolouring on these aluminum parts or is it simply a case of polish and elbow grease.

Evening Peter, one product that comes up in engine cleaning conversations over on the 356 Registry is Simple Green. It seems Simple Green has mythical cleaning properties that generations of Americans swear by.

I've never used it, it's only recently become available over here, but if I had a grimy engine I'd definitely be wanting to try it out.
