Post by Darren65 »

Maybe affected by the market's obsession with 'matching numbers' ...

Non matching is the most common comment against it elsewhere. Shame, sounds like a decent genuine owner and a nice car with lots of history but no mention of why the original engine was ditched.

Andy, you often comment that the early 911 market has become very expensive and when you get to the pricing level of this S then I think everything has to be correct to attract those with the funds to buy it.

Mike

The 'reduced' asking price of 135,000 Euros , which is a bit north of £120,000 at the moment , is not really reasonable to the average DDK person is it ??

I think there need to be a big correction for prices of stuff that does not suit investment types ie non-matching numbers etc.

I would agree that a matching numbers car should probably demand a % premium over a non matching numbers car. However there are several other factors that would be taken into account by knowledgeable buyers

A big factor for me would be demand over availability, for those models which are small in number and don't come on the market to often.
Condition/originality, cars which are original in the current market which have been maintained correctly or those which have been restored to a high std all seem to be demanding high prices.
Unique cars, those which stand out and are a little different to others on the market, there are a number of bespoke/hot rod early cars out there on this forum and on earlysregistry which I think would demand a premium if they went on the market.

This car on first impressions looks good, so if the only non std item is a non matching engine I would say the price being asked is reasonable when you look at some of the other cars on the market which are matching and Need a lot of major work

....agree that not much seems 'reasonable' when it comes to early 911's these days but then compared to the asking price for similar cars?

Market seems disjointed to me.......basket cases seem to fetch colossal sums.....running cars that require a full resto making £70K........and as for Duemila Ruote!!!

The asking price of many, albeit very nice, T's are approaching the cost of this car........I think I'd look past the stamping on the engine case!

Not sure in the UK what can be called 'reasonable' money now for a classic.
Someone with an income of £40K/yr with a young family and a young mortgage will see a £10K MGB or maybe a TR about the limit of classic motoring as a hobby.

The 911 has become the car for a fare more wealthy individual to have as a hobby car with a substantially larger income if young.
Way of the modern world and that is that.
We are lucky or skill full to have these cars.
To get one now you simply need a good income or a good lump sum to have a top car, even an average hot rod.

These cars are of this value for many reasons and I cannot see a £130K '73T tumbling to a £30k value for a very long time, if ever.
I cannot think of ANY classic car to rise in value and then crash. Some may vary +/- 15% depending on the economy influencing disposable income or investment opportunities.
Some cars stagnate and thankfully sit in the sub £10K marker. These cars are really needed for the continuance of the classic car interest in this country which is huge.

Anyone who went to the NEC in November will have seen the mass interest first hand.

Bro, doueven 1990?

Mid range classics like Healeys and E Types fell by 50% or more, exotic stuff by more than that. Million pound cars became £200k in a matter of weeks.

True enough, but easy to say in hindsight.

I think values do fluctuate, and therefore market participants have the opportunity to make money. But, as the performance of most private investors in equities shows, it's slightly more likely that we will panic into selling low and unwisely buy high!

On the bright side you can drive a car and it's a lot more fun than a share certificate.

^ What he said.

The question is - how many people paying over £100k for a 2.4 T are enthusiasts that will keep the car for 20 years and how many will panic and sell if values start to slide.

Who would pay £90k for one if they were nervous it wouldn't be worth that in a few years? £80k? I think they'd need to be down towards £50 or £60k to be worth buying purely for ownership enjoyment, anything above that is partly speculation.

The counter argument is that the folk paying six figures for them don't need the money so will just hold on to them, but the above comment on shares suggests that ain't the case.

Well , I guess in spite of being very old and having seen a few economic cycles , I still cannot call the market.

If I needed to go out and get a £120k sportscar that I would use most days rather than put away off road for half the year or into storage as an 'asset' , I would get an Italian car , not this 2.2S , but a Ferrari 458 . There's one for sale at £119,995 (!) just down the road from me....gets coat...
