Wheel nuts

Open headed wheel nuts on race cars with Fuchs...

Are they regular steel nuts or an open headed lightweight alloy ? Alloy as in the regular road car nuts

Usually std steel open M14 x 1.5 nuts with ball seating (as opposed to tapered seating).

That's the correct torque but I have to admit - I've never used a torque wrench on the wheel nuts on any car I've ever owned ...

Another option on open wheel nuts is to get a set of Chris Flavell's (fetuhoe on DDK) Titanium ones.

I changed my wheel nuts on my 73T in 1991 when I first went hill climbing. Closed head nuts are not allowed in Motorsport regulated by the MSA.
My memory is not too good, but iirc the steel dome seated steel nuts I used and still on the car were VW transporter van which I presume are normal Beetle nuts?

For all these years I've used 80 lbft because I done trust the strength of the cast alloy Compomotive wheels I have.

None have ever come loose....

Beetles use bolts, not studs. The open wheel nuts are, indeed, VW transporter 1971-on (or thereabouts – the change to disc brakes is the defining point).

If you use T4 Nuts be careful as the ball seat isn't as deep as the seat on the Aluminium Wheel Nut and a Tyre shop using a 'rattle gun' could damage a Fuchs Alloy.

We made the Ti nuts with a deeper ball seat to avoid this problem.

I can't locate the purchase invoice for the nuts I have but pretty sure they came from one of Andy's recommendations?.......I do remember them being as cheap as chips though!

Will let you know if I can find where they came from.

Chris is spot on that they do sit deeper in opening so you need to be careful.

The 'BruceM' ones are like mine and after 25 years have not rusted!

Think I paid £10 for all 25 of them....

The T4 nuts - Febi - Bilstein are now about £1.00 each and I think I have a box of 100 somewhere.

The Ti nuts are costly at £6.00 each - £120 a set of 20 - UK Delivery Included.

They are available in the USA at $260 per set of 20.
