1965 912 Australian delivered resto mod project

Post by 9er »

I am new here, but I see there is a good support base for the 912 cars so I thought I would give some information on mine and post a link to my restoration thread.

I have linked into page 7 only because I don't think the pictures are visible before that http://www.typ901.org/showthread.php?t=4566&page=7

My car is Chassis 350696 delivered to Australia in October 1965 it came in as a Signal Red 5 speed, 3 gauge with painted dash.

I have had the car for about 3 years and I am starting to make some good progress.

I was lucky in that the car had all its factory hanging panels (identified by the stamp of the last 3 digits of the chassis number) and apart from having a 2.2 litre 911 engine fitted was pretty much as it came. ( I have an original '65 912 engine stored away)

My vision is to restore it as close as possible to original however making my own changes to make it the Porsche that I really want.

To that end Signal Red is gone and it will instead be Oslo Blue, a 1963 356 colour.
The standard 4.5" chrome wheels have been refinished,

but I also have a set of 944 Turbo space saver wheels to interchange for a bit of an Outlaw look.
These are the wheels.

The 2.2 engine is being built with a later crankshaft and will be about 2.5 Litre aiming for about 180HP.
The gearbox is completely rebuilt with a Modena LSD.

Gauges have been refurbed.

I have had a new wiring harness made by Kroon in the Netherlands

Anyway I'll chuck in a few pictures, and a link to my build thread.

The paint dipping process removes paint and body deadener/sealer only but not rust.
When the body came back it was even possible to see the manufacturers stamp on the steel floor panels.

All covered now though.

These are the seats that I have had made which are a modern take on the R seat option for SWB cars.
I had the houndstooth made (In the UK :) ) in Blue/Black and white to tie in with the body colour.

G'day, Welcome to the Forum.
Looks a really nice car and a great restoration. Will be looking forward to more posts.
The West End cabinet brings back memories of when I lived in Adelaide back in the seventies, but myself and my friends were Southwark drinkers. Keep up the good work!
Regards Stefan.

What was your process for prep and covering on the floor pans and fuel tank area
And what products did you use

Thanks

Cheers,
For the most part, once the bare metal was clean, the base coat is a high quality Epoxy primer followed by UPol Gravitex and then satin black 2K urethane top coat.
