My car has the voltage regulator bolted to the left hand side of the engine bay (inner fender). Looks original to me. There is a separate wiring harness from the generator to the voltage regulator. Three wires. This has definitely been modified. Was there originally a separate harness like this, or was the generator wiring part of a larger harness?
A brief description of an original harness would help. My current best guess is two thick cables (brown for D- and red for D+) and one normal cable (grey?) for DF, and that these are bundled together to make a separate generator harness.
