Replacement 914 Fuel Pump

Hi All,

I'm new here, having recently bought a 1972 914. I had it checked out by a Porsche specialist before buying, and It was running well, but now it's cutting out while driving.

The problem appears to be the fuel pump, and so I have been looking to purchase a replacement. It seems they are not easy to find!

I can find some online located in the US, but I would like to avoid weeks of waiting for delivery if possible. Any they are expensive!!

I'm therefore wondering if anybody knows where I can find a pump for an injected '72 1.7l in the UK or Europe?

Also, it seems that some people have swapped the original part for a more commonly available pump with just an inlet and outlet, and connected the return to the outlet?? I'm a little confused.

Any advice would be very gratefully received!

Welcome!

Before you go down the expensive route of a new pump, have you checked the relay, relay board, fuse, fuse holder and the wiring?

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been through these parts, not found anything that looks too bad, but replaced the relays in the engine bay board just to be safe. I haven't tried driving the car again yet, and I don't want to risk getting stranded again.

Even if the pump hasn't been the culprit, it looks to be in really poor condition, and has been leaking quite badly, so I think it needs to be replaced regardless.

The car is currently with my local Porsche dealership, as it's really close to my house, and I needed to get it to a workshop before it died again. Which it DID, a few hundred yards from the workshop, but that's another story...

The mechanic looking after my car there has loads of experience with air-cooled models, and he is as sure as he can be that it's the pump. Dealership can't get a pump of course, but will fit one if I source it.

Worth talking to you local Bosch centre, when my pump failed they managed to come up with a suitable replacement.
