Tips on fitting a speedo cable??

Folks

Have been trying for 2 hours to fit a speedo cable with limited success. I am feeding the clock end of the cable from the rear of the car (gearbox end). Have attached the new cable to the old and pulling from the near the gear stick. Have removed the floor cover in the rear passenger area, the cable is sticking near the handbrake area. I even removed the speedo cable retaining nut.
The carpet is new and recently glued into position, is there another inspection hole near the handbrake?

Any thoughts / tips

There are no other 'holes' and I suspect the cable is catching the throttle lever or the hand brake mechanism.
Years ago I changed mine and had a real game in the very same spot.

Took the seat out (passengers for more room) and slackened-off the handbrake lever at the base, left the cables attached. This allowed as much room to fight in as possible and swore a lot.

This was in my '73T coupe but I think the access holes are the same.

Well, the fight is almost over. On removing the handbrake, found a cable retaining band, once this was peeled back then hay presto...............it still didn't fit. There was another retaining band under the gear stick and now the cable is installed (though not connected as yet).
