DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

So, half an hour ago I thought I'd freshen up the front of the car by taking the pitted cap nuts off the wipers and replacing them with some sparkly new ones.

Passenger side was fine, then came the drivers side........




The spindle threaded section sheared clean off, it was easy turning as soon as I started so probably would have failed at some point when I was using the wipers (?).

Is it available as a separate part from anywhere? I see PET lists the whole RHD crank drive, 901.628.022.00, and there are several of the LHD available on eBay which I presume I could dismantle for the part (?), but that seems overkill for my needs. Perhaps a repair is possible?

I think you would probably be better getting an old unit for the one part you need, and using it to refurb yours.
Looking at the spindles, there is a fair amount of rusty gunk in th spindle channels, so may be best to strip it all down, clean and re grease it all at the same time?

I do not think there is an easy fix to the bit that has snapped off. If there is you are going to need to take the whole mechanism out.

Not sure the spindles rods are different on LHD to RHD but I have a couple of spares from rebuild of our LHD you can have for a donation to DDK

When you think about it, all the nut does is hold the wiper onto the serrations. So you may be able to drill out, tap and insert a stud or specially made adaption (loctited) and retain the spindle. However, I am in agreement about stripping down and making sure all the shafts are free. When I serviced mine I was amazed they still rotated all. It was so so gunged (spelling) up. A good recipe for blown fuse or burnt out motor.

Thanks guys, looks like I've got some work to do on her then! I reckon it'll be a good time for new seals too. Deeman that's an option I was considering, possibly a helicoil into the spindle and then a stud, suitably reduced and re-tapped to fit into it. Robind I've pm'd you about the parts, many thanks.
