911 Front and Rear Suspension Components Paint Finish/Colour

Post by Strictly »

I have taken the front and rear suspension of a 67 911 SWB (base model), to change the bushes and shocks.

While I am at it, it would make sense to clean up and paint the suspension components, like the A arms, front torsion bar cross member, rear wishbones, etc.

Everything will be blasted and painted - my question is painted what? Satin Black? Gloss/Matt/Lacquer (on ally only)???

The exact bits i need advice with are below, ive also completely guessed at a correct finish. It dosent have to be factory correct, I want to make the best job of it I can, without it sticking out like a sore thumb.

Front
  • A-Arms - Black? Satin?
Front Torsion Bar Cross member - black?.
Steering Rack - Vapour Blast (ally) and laquer?
Front Struts (Koni Inserts) are BOGE - Satin Black?
Rear
  • Spring Plate Arms - Black?
Torsion Bar End Covers - Zinc?
    Bannana Wishbones - ??????
    Driveshafts - Black?
Rear Shock absorbers - will be Koni to match the front, now here a question leave them red, or paint them black to match the boge struts on the front with koni inserts inside, or paint the front struts red to match the rear konis...
Decisions deciions lol. Any advice appreciated....

Is this for a concours car or a driver ? If a driver then your answers look good but use the best coating that will protect because it will be unseen to most

My understanding is most of the running gear is satin black including banana arms, a arms etc and that's how we have done our 66
Steering rack has been vapour blasted but we have not lacquered

We have done a fair bit of research but lots on here with massive more knowledge than I so will stand corrected as and when......

I'm with James, just protect it best you can as if you use your car it will all be dirt coloured very soon after.

Alloy rear wishbones are natural finish (or at least mine are, just as they came off a 77 car)

for the absorbers and front struts found the closest match to yellow/green on the Halfords rattle can shelf over a good primer.

The parts are dirty instantly if you use the car. Rest done in Hammerite Smooth satin black.
New bolts everywhere makes all the difference for a while!

I wouldn't know what changes there were between 67 and 70 but you can see one of the best reference sources available here......
