Are these case savers/timeserts?

During the strip of my engine today I noticed these raised sections around the bottom of the head studs. Are these inserts or just the original casting?

They look like the original casting to me.

Makes sure you time cert the stud on the case half near the intergear bearing it very often pulls. Not good when you find out as you are bolting the case back together.

I'd like to know as well. I'm assuming it's like a helicoil - enlarging the hole and fitting a harder thread into it? (Now someone will tell me I've got my helicoil definition wrapped round my arse)

Time Serts are a thread repair / strengthening system used when rebuilding engines. They are tapped and inserted into the cases to effectively replace the original thread providing better grip holding the case together.

Iirc the Timeserts are steel?
Thus, scrape on the annular ring, and if soft alloy it is the casting ( I think it is) and if steel...

My 7R case I built ages ago into a 2.4E/S was solid as a rock so left the studs in the case and built it up. Never let go. Majordad has that engine now, or at lest bought it off me a long time ago.

If I doubt TSert the lot, but a lot of precise work.

Thanks Graham, I'm still torn on if I take it fully apart at all. All my studs are also solid and in good condition.

Just gathering thought at the moment.

Yes, a dilema for sure, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Maybe T engines have a better time of things, 130 BHP etc, lower red lines and us T owners are better more sympathetic drivers of course!

If you want it leak free then it has to come apart.
I found getting everything clean was the worst bit of my 4 rebuilds so far...

They are diy but you do need to know your onions in engineering terms you must be able to index a hole centre and drill vertically to a fixed depth on a measured pcd then tap vertically . if you or someone you know can do that they are "diy". Pm me if you want them.

I've been looking at buying the kit to do this, but realistically thinking about the risk of messing it up if I do split the case this will be part of the machining work I'll have to farm out.

Hi Gary, I am keenly following your engine strip down as you are at a similar stage to me.

I was under the impression that case savers are different to and a better fix than timeserts. My 'local' specialist is quoting £280 ex VAT to fit case savers to a case - and so is the way I am think of going.

I am not sure if it is then prudent to fit new case studs or can the old steel ones be reused?

Anyone have any experience of the differences between the two methods?

Finally I also have two exhaust studs that have snapped. Is you drilling jig homemade or available online?

The Timeserts are a threaded sleeve, helicoils are a wire of a special cross section.
The new Timeserts kits come with the drills and a jig
I think to get them vertical.
It is crucial to get the seats in true with the cylinder studs as they are so long. A small out of true insertion will have the studs way off centres, but Gary will understand this only too well.

Personally, I would leave well alone unless one or more studs are in trouble
