I hope someone can help advise me.
I read in the workshop manual I need to heat up the piston to remove the gudgeon pin can anyone recommend the best way of doing this?

A heat gun is usually enough to loosen the pin enough to push it out. I use a piece of wooden dowel of the appropriate diameter if it needs a tappety-tap or two.
