The First 912

Post by Rob 911/356 »

I was offered today 450001 which was the first Karmann built 65-912, turned up in California, apparently needs full restoration.
An interesting project for anyone with deep pockets.

Hi Andrew,
Sorry no I have no more details than that, a guy in CA was looking out for a couple of cars for me and sent me an email to see if I was interested in it. He hadn't finalised the deal to purchase it at the time I believe, and didn't send me any pics. He originally said he wanted $56000, when I replied to say I wasn't interested he said he believed after speaking to several people it was actually worth even more, not sure how much it will end up being.

I'm sure there was a car going round a few years ago that was supposedly the first 912. If i remember correctly it was in need of a full resto, was $100k and was a strange mix of parts iirc. But it was a while ago now...

No, not that car 13415; it is actually a replacement body, not a prototype.
I do have a couple of photos of 450001, but they are not hosted anywhere; extremely rough, the right inner wing near where the VIN is located appears to be separating. Offered to a friend in the biz at US$89K, and was instantly rejected; my friend really knows his 1964 through 1966 production cars and could see that it would be uneconomic to restore.

Not sure that I agree with you Dave - it is marked as Versuch (experimantal) in the records
Of course that does not make it a prototype - it could have been used for anything by Porsche

I went and saw that red car at Max's place the other day when I was passing, I didn't do the full 110 point inspection, but man that is one super today car, like a timewarp, its incredible and really beautiful. And given the prices of the same car with another 2 cylinders, still a bargain IMHO.

The new owner of 450001 has ordered the Kardex through me, so it will be interesting to see the dates.
