1958 356A T2 Coupe RHD

Post by 58A - 71E »

After much deliberation, soul searching and drying of tears Mrs 58A has decided its time to move her car on.
Some may have previously seen a post in the Market Place Discussion about the car but I thought it about time to post a plug here too.

This car has taken us all over Europe in the last 4 years without incident (despite a little hiccup at Zeebrugge docks on the way to this years CLM!) but unfortunately we don't get the time to drive this as much as it should be.

The Car

Originally supplied to Lindsay Motors, Johannesburg, South Africa in March 1958 chassis 103041 was specified with Silver Metallic paint, red interior and US bumpers. The car was brought to the UK in 1986, it had 5 UK owners before Tracey purchased the car in 2002.

The car was entrusted to Barry Curtis in 1989 for a complete mechanical rebuild where the original engine cases were replaced with those from an unused industrial engine but retaining the A internals. It was restored by Roger Bray restoration in 1994 and successive owners lavished it with sympathetic maintenance and as a testament to how good the car presented it still won the PCGB R7 region concours in 2006 despite it hiding a few issues!

It was then taken off the road for a full ground up restoration to concours winning standard which was completed in 2010. (see resto thread section viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27721 )
The bodywork was undertaken by Lee Peacock of Autoclassica bodyworks and fully documented / photographed. We drove the car to CLM 2010 after a full going over by PRServices. It was entered into the PCGB concours in 2011 where the car won first prize and again in 2013 it won top honours.

Body and Interior

The car was stripped at cleaning consultants (West Sussex) before being rebuilt with new panels on the jig at Autoclassica including a new Porsche front clip, sills, heater tubes, floors, inner rear wings, battery box and fuel tank panel. Finished in Glasurit metallic silver 608 the seats were fully refurbished by A S Pickering (Bradford). New German basketweave oatmeal carpets were fitted throughout, including the floors, as well as new rubber mats.
All seals have been renewed and the correct A Blaupunkt Bremen 6v radio with Hirschmann red tip aerial and A speakers is one of the few additional interior options.

Mechanical

The engine has been completely blueprint rebuilt with new bearings, balanced rods, crank, flywheel and clutch. Cases were checked and cleaned, Crank magnaflux crack tested and polished (std:std). Rods new small end bushes fitted and reamed, weighed and balanced and checked for ovality, Flywheel resurfaced, Oil pump resurfaced, tach drive rebuilt. New 1600S Mahle pistons and cylinders, Glenn Ring rebuilt Bosch distributor, rebuilt Fuel Pump, PRServices rebuilt Zenith 32 carbs. New racing Aluminium oil cooler. Rebuilt heads with new valves. New exhaust with high temp camcoating.
The Gearbox likewise was completely stripped with all new bearings and synchro rings. Suspension fully rebuilt with new shocks, bushes and bearings.

Additional

Every invoice from 1988 to the present day comes with the car (extending to 2 volumes) and a full photographic record is available of the restoration. The car comes with a photo disk of its rebuild, documents file folder, owners manual, repro tool kit and letter of authenticity from Porsche.

It has only had dry weather use since 2010 (apart from the epic downpour we had on the last day at CLM this year!)
The car is with Peter at RPR626 http://www.rpr626.co.uk/Porsche-Cars-fo ... -sale.html and can be viewed at his place. (loads of photos via the link)
Obviously the car has been used over the last 4 years but is still in really excellent condition. Anyone who has seen it will testify to it being a head turner.
Will consider offers on the advertised price (£99,950) for a DDk'r :)
