Hi embarking on my first restoration project (based in UK)

Hi my wifes finally given me the go ahead so i'm looking for a 912 (or 911) to restore. I am a mechanic but never done a restoration project before and am not a porsche specialist (if we were talking about Ka's then thats a different matter!)
Any advice would be appreciated - where to find one, should i stay away from one without gearbox and engine, would a non original engine make much difference on its final value, interiors :/
I've also always wondered how you would go about buying one from the US - are there companys who will push a rolling chassis onto a ship for you or would you have to go there and collect it in person?

Speak to Max at Revival who is a good contact person for 912s. He often has a good range of cars to consider. I think you just missed out on a couple of cars that don't look comestically great but would of been good for someone, like yourself, to refresh/restore. However, more will be along (he is not working from Tues to next Mon)

Yes you can buy a car from the states. Look at 912bbs for for sale and people watching ebay other there.

I would suggest you to buy from a trusted source in the states and to buy the best car you can from there. Yes you can buy a rolling shell and there are some good ones for sale but since you can't see the car in person there are also some horror stories from people on here. Rust free isn't always rust free!

The best of luck- it should be exciting. Many on here have gone before you, in all respects. I would spend a lot of time reviewing the huge variety of restoration threads in the restoration forum; forewarned is forearmed. All the advice on buying/ importing/ who to use is within.

Thanks for your replies - i didnt expect much really as it was a bit of a dull post with no pictures to show off (i will as soon as i have something to show off!)

Beverly hills car club - Really, i was only browsing through their site via ebay the other day!

I will contact revival - the more work the better for me though as realistically my budget is £6000 - £8000 max.

I seem to remember there was a shell, advertised on here from NZ, for about that but I think it might of been without an engine. Which could cost more then your budget again! Unfortunately the days of £6/8k 912 projects seem to have gone.

I wouldnt go on NZ car prices, they are through the roof - my brother just bought a golf 4 with 200k on the clock for $3000.
