Speculation on a future Porsche Classic

Post by Superlight7 »

Casually looking for a few cars to restore / tinker with so I'm asking for opinions on which Porsche models people feel could be next in line for experiencing the last few years of bonkers price rises that the pre impact bumper cars have enjoyed recently.

I'm lucky to have a restored 72 and a low mileage 993, so looking for something in between.

Carrera 3 and early Turbo, followed by narrow-bodied 2.7. And, of course, any 1966 912 fitted with a warmed-over 911 engine.

Narrow IB seems like a fair punt. 912 are getting pricey in uk & EU but turn up in the US at quite a bit less. Anything GT3 or manual turbo that is under £50k?

But I wouldn't know :)

This.

No point looking for investment value in something you want to play with and enjoy, probably 2 years late for that now.

I wouldn't consider anything water cooled, despite the talking up of various GT3s, 924s or 928s, to be anything other than a car that may not loose much value, rather than proper hikes as in all the air cooled 911s. Put you efforts into finding that elusive, real barn find, a low mileage, historied, unrestored car in rust free condition.

Some of the water pumpers, like the 924 Carrera GTS, are already serious money. IMO when looking at a decision like this its risky trying to predict the market. While we'd all like to find a forgotten original 'S', still owned by the unknowing widow of the original buyer, what you more realistically can find are cars where values have firmed and already started to increase, so Carrera 3, and late 3.2s are still a good buy.

Are Audi RS2 or Mercedes W124 500Es eligible?

Fully agree...my thought was something from the air cooled stable...although a poverty spec beige 924 is starting to appeal...LOL

The best place for your money has got to be an early 3 litre turbo. Very few about, and even fewer in nice condition. They just happen to be drop dead gorgeous, and fast as well, what more could you ask for!
