Not an expert opinion but I think you've answered your own question. My hotrod thing is light like your early car. I built a 2.8 twin spark thing for it which is powerful and noisy, frankly and in the real world the car is over engined for my capability. Part of me wishes I'd built a less powerful and smaller capacity engine.

You say you wanted a fun reliable early 911, I'd change to a manual box and build your existing 2 litre with a sensible traditional performance spec, so shuffle pin, squirters, oil by pass and later pump, careful accurate balance and higher comp pistons, twin pug if necessary (10.5:1 ?) , some head work if you must and "fast road cams", webers/pmos, modern ignition . Be a nice reliable 150 bhp and fun and reliable.

Just my view though?

Hi

Not sure how much of a rebuild you would get for £4000. Around 40-60 hours work for a standard engine rebuild so after labour you are not left with much cash for anything else.

Barrels and pistons are around £2500 a set, you can use after market pistons and re-worked barrels for less money. I don’t think it would cost you any more to go from 2.0 to 2.2 litre as they use the same stroke crank. My 2.2 runs 190 BHP and is a hoot to drive.
If you go for twin plug and 2.5 depending on what induction you use could be expensive or very expensive.

In my experience it doesn’t matter if you are in a 2.0T or a 2.7RS we all have a great time driving down the road and nobody gets left behind.

Kind Regards

Sorry John do you mean suspension overhaul etc?
No, I had my engine rebuilt, then the brakes rebuilt, then the suspencion with new bushes and shocks and still it never fizzed or filled me with confidance.

At this time it looked like this....

And then..

And the ugly duckling turned into the beautiful swan.

And now it feels like a sports car. :drunken:

I once was running in a pack off longhoods in California, in my 125hp 71T. My pals were in a 2.7 hot twin plug, an SC motor 73 or two. At the end of one crazy canyon or other, crazy, twisty, empty, stupid grin fun, we were talking sbout how hard were you going? Most were '6/10ths", etc, I pulled up last of course, and piped up "12/10ths balls out man". A T may not win on the track but it aint a slouch on an enthusiasts road drive and will only lose out on longer straights...which you shouldnt have too many of on your montain weekends anyways. Just redline it in 2nd and 3rd, you are guaranteed fun no matter what engine. Its the 'elasticity' of the combination of these motors and the light chassis.... Magic formula.

when you get the gearbox rebuilt, chuck in some lower ratios. You'llwant 160bhp and to add some lightness. Spend the money on suspension and drive the wheels off it.

Yours is a question with no fixed answer.

An over powered 911 on a UK road unless deserted for miles will become a bore as you will struggle to open it all up.

A revvy perky and torquey engine will be a joy, and 150 bhp and a car at 1000Kg will be a real hoot.

I would '2.2' your 2 litre, carbs (PMO imho) and E cams, S compression ratio pistons and a total rebuild will all new parts. If you are able, you can DIY this kind of engine.

My 73T was never happier to drive than when it has a 2.4 s spec engine with E cams.

It now has a stock 3.2 on Bosche injection , another 'steam train' type of engine with about 230 bhp, very lazy if you like, very fast if i want (1000Kg).

It has done 130K miles ish and only had fresh plugs/dist cap, never been apart.

Not sure if a 915 box will go into your shell without a touch of hammering in the tunnel?

None of this is any good unless the shell is solid, that that is your first port of call I feel.
