Decal preservation

Now this may sound like an extreme geek question, but I reckon if it does,
I'm probably in good company here when it comes to the details on our cars, right!?

My 72 still has the original Weltmeister decal in the rear quarterlight, but it's looking
dry and ready to start cracking up.
Back when I started looking for my car, I bought a repro decal from the early911sregister
(2 years with a sticker but no car!), so I could just remove the original and put a new one in...
But that would be a shame.

Anyone any ideas / experience of applying something to the decal to try help prolong its life?

Maybe it makes me sound obsessive, but I haven't even mentioned how I creep out of bed
to go sit in the car in the middle of the night... Doh!

Clear nail varnish, would stop it cracking any further, or pva or any other type of glaze or varnish.

Or you could cut a circle (very slightly larger in diameter than the decal) from 'Librafilm' (sticky-back plastic as used to cover the outer jackets of library books) & apply it over the decal.

Are you sure it is an original decal ?
