This is me and mine

Post by YeehafoofooMcgraw »

Hi All

I wanted a 356 for ages. A hat full of VW Beetle memories from years ago planted that seed. So two years ago I jumped in. The biggest surprise was how much I'd changed into a great big wuss. Modern cars are good at that, aren't they? Aircon? Nope. Smooth quiet ride? Nope. Smell of petrol? yup. Left hand drive. How many times do I climb in the wrong side? Lots. And if someone is watching I have to rummage through the glove box and come back 10 minutes later.

A shiney old car is not like a modern car, but a lot like an old one and now that I understand that, it's a joy. Now it's time for driving and I love it.

Stunning car. Welcome. Be good to hear more about the specs - I spy a Hurst Shifter - running Type 1 box?

Minimal, beautiful. And the smell of petrol's strangely addictive.

That 356 looks absolutely awesome. Why would anyone prefer a 911? Congratulations sir.

Very nice looking 'A'. I like the detail on the wheel and brake drum. Engine looks nice too.

I think its a pleasure having wind down windows, no ECU, no dashboard warning lights for leaving your hand brake on, and no power steering. Simplicity is so much better.

Pleased you enjoy driving a car now over 54 years old.

Wow, thanks for your kind words and warm welcome.

Quick answers,

It's a Hurst shifter tig welded onto the stock one.

The engine is a 2 litre twin spark from MP&P. New drums with titanium nuts.

Cheers

Welcome! That MP&P quick must be quite quick but not cheap? What is it like over 80 mph? Mine starts to feel a bit light. Somebody said something about a flat bottom.

It's not modern car quick, but feels fast enough for the rest of the car. makes for a great package and yes it was expensive, approximately twice as much a eye wateringly painfull.

At 80 it's steady, at 100 it's a little weavy. It's like there's slack between the steering wheel and road wheels, not much, just enough to keep you on your toes!
