Folks,

After lurking for a while now I thought I 'd introduce myself more formally.

I live down on the Sussex coast near Bognor Regis with my two sons (8 and 14). I've owned sportscars since I was 19, and a few Porsches over the years. My circumstances changed sometime ago, and with the change came the opportunity to acquire something 'interesting' to go in the garage. Parameters were that it had to be good to drive, be able to take the three of us, and be a sensible ownership proposition. A 911 of some kind was high on the list of possibles, and I went though all of the usual candidates.

In January I was on business in Florida, and as I drove past a dealership south of Daytona Beach I happened to catch sight of that familiar roof profile edged in chrome... As it turned out, I'd seen a 1974 2.7S, but on hearing I was looking for a 'long-hood' the dealer took me through to the workshop, where a yellow '73T was on the ramp. It had clearly been 'got at' over the years, but from what I could see appeared to be solid. I took some photo's, emailed them to the UK, and on the basis there were no obvious major worries, agreed to buy the car the next day.

Back in the UK I arranged to have the car shipped (a painless process, thanks to Kingstown) and it arrived in Southampton in March. From there it travelled to Tuthill's, who were briefed to ensure the car was safe and usable. This involved work to suspension, braking system, lighting, new tyres, and a full service amongst a long list of bits and pieces. I also sourced some contemporary Recaro's to replace the '90's contraptions in the car, and had a Prototipo double wrapped and fitted. On the up-side the DVLA insisted on registering it as a '72, so it qualified for historic VED.

A couple of weeks ago, I collected the car and the boys and I have enjoyed several hundred miles since. The interior is still a mess; I've ordered door cards from Southbound and I'm looking for a period radio that has FM and aux input. The respray in yellow (over original silver) was poorly done, and there are a number of chip but at the moment I've just cut it back a little to regain some shine.

The other priority is to sort an engine out. The motor fitted is the original 2.4 with the K-Jetronic system. Currently its breathing heavily and hesitates horribly at part throttle until hot. It would also benefit from a few more horses. I'm investigating swopping in a 3.0 or 3.2, but also having the current motor re-built as a 2.7. Any suggestions would be welcome.

In the winter I'll re-carpet the interior, and look at a respray. In the meantime we'll be enjoying the drive and the positive reaction from other road users! I will be at the Classic Le Mans with my eldest and some friends so will look up the DDK contingent.

Well it is an open prison..

The 3.0 I'd been on the trail of didn't come up to expectation. I've been offered a 3.2, but need to find an ECU. Any ideas?

Do you want to run a standard ECU or tweak it with Megasquirt & EDIS/DTA/Emerald etc?

My 3.0 is running SSIs, stock '83 dizzy & CDi & 40 IDS Webers. At least it would be if the engine wasn't on the floor (again) with the 915 in bits with a spun pinion bearing.

I'd be happy with a standard Motronic. I reckon 230 or so bhp will be sufficient for a beginner!

Just came across your post. Interesting I also live I guess close by to you in Aldwick just west of Bognor Regis. If you see a blue 'A' on the roads that will be me there isn't another one around here

Hi and welcome

It might be worth noting that the torque of the 3.2 engine will eat your 915 gearbox. Porsche modified the 915 that was used on the 3.2's with oil spray bars and a cooler I think, to try to make them last. These effects will be exaggerated if your gearbox is not in tip top condition. HTH.

Yes, I'm in Aldwick up in between the Craigwell and Bay estates.

And I'm also looking at gearbox options.
