If you are looking for an excellent value, thoroughly sound and really very pretty entry to classic 911 ownership look no further.
This exceptionally attractive little Targa was originally an American 1970 model year 2.2 T Targa. It found its way to the UK in 2002 when it was bought for restoration by its one and only UK owner who has owned it ever since.
Being a Calfornia car the bodywork was sound and needed very little attention, but the car was in need of a total mechanical rebuild and full reassembly. After a three year labour of love and a massive folder full of receipts totalling many thousands of pounds the car was finally finished, MoTd and UK registered in September 2005. It has covered fewer than 7000 miles since.
The original carburetted 2.2 litre engine and dog-leg gearbox have gone and are replaced by the more powerful, more robust Mechanically-Fuel-Injected engine and conventional-pattern 915 gearbox from a 1972/3 911 2.4 T-E. Both engine and box were rebuilt and detailed and perform beautifully. A rolling road printout shows a healthy 154bhp at 6000rpm and the motor pulls perfectly throughout the rev range thanks to carefully rebuilt components, including the notoriously tricky MFI pump.
Inside is trimmed black and includes highly desirable and valuable Recaro Sports seats.
On first glance the paint appears black too, but once the sun catches it the colour shows up as a deep metallic purple, a wonderful contrast to the period brightwork and gold badging. The car is fitted with new replica Fuchs wheels, including the spare.
It drives very well indeed, with no foibles whatsoever. The very worst we could find is an occasionally sticky rev counter (cured by a tap on the glass!), a non working clock and broken interior courtesy light. It really is a very sound, decent little car.
