This 1972 911 2.4 E is just as bright and lovely as it looks.
The 1972-3 2.4 litre models are amongst the most desirable of the early 911s, blending the classic small-bumpered look with the most modern fuel-injected engines and the 915 gearbox. The 911 E is the mid-range car. It lacks the very top end power of the 190bhp 911 S, but in most driving situations it feels little different and is usefully less expensive to buy. It therefore makes a very sensible choice for someone seeking a quick classic 911 without having to spend upwards of £70,000 for a nice one.
This RHD UK car was supplied new in 1972 to the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and has a detailed ownership history ever since.
It has been comprehensively restored under the care of the most recent owner and is now a very fine example once more.
A bare metal body restoration was carried out by a Porsche Specialist in 2005/6 and a comprehensive photographic record is supplied showing the depth and quality of the work. At the same time the interior was retrimmed and the brakes and suspension rebuilt and renewed as necessary.
The engine was rebuilt by JZ Machtech at 26,000 miles and their dyno showed it to still be producing a strong 178bhp at 33,000 miles. It now shows 38,500.
As with most of these cars, there are a few deviations from standard - such as the earlier engine lid grille and badging - that would require changing if you are seeking period perfection, but if you want an utterly solid, pretty and very useable classic 911, with a surprising turn of speed, this car makes an excellent case for itself.
It drives very well indeed and since the restoration has carried the enthusiast owner to Le Mans and back without trouble. It ought to continue to provide a new owner with enjoyable, inexpensive classic performance motoring.
