RHD 914

Post by moriarty »

Purely as matter of interest, how many RHD 914's are there on here? I know of 2 others (IAN's Crayford and Wayne's racer) any more?

I sold silver one with a GT bodykit a couple of years ago, that required a complete (and I mean complete  ) resto.

If my memory serves me right it went to a chap near Leicester somewhere, along with a super solid shell and spare new floor pans to assist with the rebuild. It was too far gone for my limited skills and certainly too uneconomical to pay to have it restored, but it seemed to be within the capabilities of the fella that bought it. He seemed very 'handy' having restored a few cars in his time.

I wonder what happened to it?

Cheers,

Kevin

I know where this one's hiding! Built by Autofarm in the late 70's (I saw it in Amersham when it was just finished................)

I have a photo of it in gunmetal gray at the 1000k race at Silverstone in the paddoc of one of the porsche teams Some time in the eightes and it looked spot on at the time . Was told it had a new bulkhead made for the conversion when i used to get all my parts off Chris Raynor in Oxon ( is he still around? ) Woz

It would need one - there is no way to accomodate the pedals unless you change or heavily modify the bulkhead (hence the need to modify or relocate the fuel tank - it follows the contours of the original LHD chassis) This conversion also has the added benefit of lots of legroom for passengers!

Happy to show you round mine if it helps with the build - based in the Midlands. Should get the car back from storage in a month or so after extension finished.

You can actually modify the the existing bulkhead but will need the services of a good panel beater if you are not into fabricating/welding yourself, i was fortunate to find such a man and we worked together on it and am glad to say it's been a worthwhile exercise. As wayne says you have to also modify the petrol tank which reduces the capacity by about a gallon, i then used the rhd pedal box from an early 911. Unfortunately thats not where it ends, theres the dash/steeringcolumn/electrics/handbrake etc.etc
I had a look at Ians' Crayford 914 to see how they did it which helped a lot (thanks Ian). If thats not put you off and fancy having a go, feel free to ask questions.

spyder_finder recently broke one, which had also been converted to a full convertible with rag top and some strange wheel arches and other body mod's.
It did look a bit odd. Blue and at one time with yellow wheels and low panels.
Drove it many years ago at PCGB Highclere Castle event round the car park.

There's also a black one out there somewhere - not a crayford and with the handbrake in the middle. It had a private plate on it about 6 years ago.

Yes its an exsiting project to be envolved with. We know our way around welding and fabrication. Been in to 914s for over 30 years now but not active for 20 or so . When i built my six there was no internet just networking the system for parts info etc. Got lots of parts from Crispin Mannors Cory-Smith and Chris Raynor etc. Its a friend of mine since school days thats on with the project who was involved with mine all those years ago. taking lots of pikkys of the job as we go along. Its going to be a nice everyday driver 2.4t six in her with stock headders etc (getting old now he needs the warmth) All i used to do when it was cold was suck a peppermint LOL. Thanks for the offer of a look round rhd racer i dont think you can beat looking at one in the metal and taking referance photos. Hope fuly we will be working on her this weekend
(weather permitting) all the best Woz
