Looking for a car to restore and so become a 'proper' member

Post by MT »

Have just posted in the WANTED section to see if someone on this forum can point me towards my next (and final?) restoration project. Since retiring 4 years ago I have qualified as welder, been on a panel beaters course and have restored from rust, dust and potentially terminal decay two Morris Travellers, a 66 S2a Landrover and a 66 TR4A IRS - and am now part way through a 59 Morris convertible.

So I think I'm ready for a proper car .....
... a RHD pre 73 A, B, C or D series 911, ideally a S or E version in average to poor, but restorable condition - obviously as complete/original/matching/V5 available condition as possible. I have learnt from my experience that a tatty/poor car that no one has had a go at is better than an average, partly but poorly restored one.

I anticipate a long search, and hence a while to become a proper member - blasting around in the TR4 will have to do for a while!

Photos of the TR4A restoration

Post by MT »

If I have done it right you should see some of the before, during and after photos - you might even catch a glimpse of the S2a landrover in the background of one. And, yes that is a rabbits nest in the back of the cockpit, so I had to wait until they weaned before I could move the car and make a start ........

Thanks for asking and giving me an excuse to show them! It's always great to look back, and consider would you have ever started if you had known how much was involved .......and realise yes, of course you would ... and would like to again.

.... so how did you do that......??
I read the FAQ and it seemed to imply the forum did not support uploaded images ... hence my photobucket link.

Have revised my requirements based on a better understanding of availabilty!!

Would now consider LHD 911, and also T version, and even a 912 project. Anyone who knows of one, or where I might look please let me know.

Have revised my 'Wanted' posting, but it is now on the second page and will shortly fall into obsurity I fear!

Convertible pics as requested. It's a 1959 (post split screen) convertible with its original plate and previously modified to have indicators (necessary if you plan to drive it anywhere on main roads!) instead of the original flick-out trafficators

http://s372.photobucket.com/albums/oo16 ... le%202010/

Oddly I don't seem to have any photos in its original crappy state (been in a garden under a tarp for 10 years or more), but you get an idea from the pics when its off to be blast cleaned and etch primed - and what's worse the PO had part restored it by welding patches over rust perforation - so I had to spend a lot of time cutting them off then letting in proper butt welded repairs. Needed a new front crossmember and offside chassis leg in the end. - and a major boot bottom repair. Thankfully it came with a good bonnet, hood frame, new front wings and repairable rears.

Fitted with disc brakes, servo and a 1098 engine and gearbox with electronic ign (in the distributor cap so looks original) and alternator. Will be Birch Grey with a maroon interior (all new) and maroon hood.

You will see from this and the TR4A I am a big fan of POR-15 products - they are expensive, but the rust encapsulator is excellent, and you can cover it with chassis black for the 'unseen' areas (under carpets, underneath, wheel arches), and with tie-coat primer and then 2 pack body colour in the 'seen but not external' areas like the engine compartment and boot interior.

Engine+ ancillaries/gearbox/loom/servo/brakes/brake piping now done. Waiting for warmer weather and the interior (Newton Commercial) to arrive. So basically I'm restoring it to be a period, but not completely original, useable car that only a Moggy expert will spot the differences - and apart from the indicators - even he (and they are all he's) will have to look under the car or under the bonnet to see them. Will post a few updates in case you are bored with all those Porsches!

I promised myself I'd get that wood-burning stove I acquired into the workshop before winter .......

Hey Barry,

Like the TR4 - all your own work, or did you 'outsource' anything, as we say in management!

You will have spotted my TR4A has a TR4 front bumper, and that it had a TR4 grille when I got it.

I fitted a TR6 ARB, polybushes, new springs/shocks and the rearshock absorber upgrade - made lots of difference to the handling, but rattles your teeth on our country lanes!

A servo on the brakes made it easier to stop as well!

Getting the panel fit and gaps was a right b*gg*r, even though the wings and door skins were Stanpart(wings) or Heritage (doors)

Used a bottle of gas, a roll of Mig wire and a full sheet of 1mm sheet steel to make repair panels and weld them in - so she's a bit like HMS Victory (or Trigger's broom, if you recall Fools and Horses!) Engine is recon'd original, although the gearbox is an recon overdrive box from a TR5.

Turns as many heads as Cheryl Cole, and, like Cheryl, they're mainly middle aged men, ......unfortunately.

Search Over

Post by MT »

Well my search is over and much quicker with a different outcome than expected. Like London buses two came along at once so I am now the proud (?) owner of not one but two pre '73 911's. Both in need of restoration, but for different reasons and from different start points.

1. Ex Bob Watson 72 RHD 2.4E - already christened the 'IKEA car' by my dear wife. This car seems to be known by everyone I meet associated with 911's so I don't need to tell you anything about it. Suffice to say it will be getting a full strip-down/rebuild as a road car - I understand it was originally blood orange, but that decision is a long way away. 'If any member knows of any reason why I should not waste many hours and pounds on this dear car, then let him/her speak now or forever hold their peace - Amen' Here it is arriving at its new home in the snows of last week.
Image
I will be disposing of the 'race' items - fuel tank, roll cage (steel), seat, etc etc in due course.

The clincher on this one was its date of manufacture was my 18th birthday.

2. A rather unusual, and a bit special, 1966 LHD ex NY state - last on the road in 1977 and still sporting its 1977 NY brake tag and DMV stickers in the windscreen for that year. Apparently the owner Dr. Willard Jones (he has made a brass plate with his name on it and fitted to the dash!! Only an American.....) died suddenly in that year and his widow just ignored his car for years. Anyway not sure where it was left because the interior is perfect, but the outside looks like it was attacked with battery acid! Actually the metal is not as damaged or pitted as you might expect, but clearly it represents a different challenge to 'IKEA car'.

Will need to take a lot of care with this one to preserve as much of the original car/features as possible. A have period good replacement doors/front wings and a rear section with the car. Will be sat in storage for a while, but it just seemed too good an opportunity to let go by.

Should keep me busy, and active on this website.....
Am getting a CoA for both from Porsche as soon as my PCGB membership comes through (free to members!). I have also paid online my membership to DDK, but am still barred from the secret inner sanctum - why is this? Do I have to wear my trousers round my ankles while singing like some other clubs I hear about??

Will run a restoration thread for each when I start, which will not be for some weeks - IKEA car first, then the 'Doctors car'

Thanks to all involved.

Mick
