Lots of great pictures which threw up a couple of questions for which I would be grateful for any feedback. It is one of the last 500 so I assume has full weight steel shell and standard glass ???
- the glovebox is fitted - is this standard ?
- the rear bumper appears steel with a metal centre section and chrome overriders - is this standard as I had assumed they would be fibreglass ?
- the front door panels have the standard capping above - standard ?
Just interested as this is good knowledge for replica builders

The over-riders certainly looks out of place on a M471. Glove box lid can sometimes be in place, I think. Not sure about the door cappings...
Someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly and no doubt throw up some more anomalies.

Interesting that you seem to be able to group the RS in to batches dependent upon what was produced at the time, such as 0-500, 501-1000, 1000-XX and so and, and date dependent.
So I could have kept a full weight steel shell, hinged windows and steel bumpers etc. but would have to have the shortened control arms to be 'period correct', or have glass bumpers, fixed windows and glaverbel but have standard arms to be another 'period' correct - i.e. a good replica has to recreate the RS chassis number set - cannot just mix and match steel bumpers with original control arms - well I could, but Mike couldn't

Unfortunately thiere was never as exact a building programme for the RS as we would like to catogarise in this way. Even 'the book' has mistakes.
The factory had originally planned to build 500 units. As demand (and further homologation) grew an extra run of 500 units were planned and then finally (as the finished cars did not have to go to the Stuttgart weighing station any more before returning to the factory for customer completion) the final run of cars were made with stocks of parts until they were exhausted. There was also modifications along the way which means it becomes very difficult to say what 'exactly' a particular chassis number came out of the factory like. Add to this the number of restorations in the 80's and 90's which did not always concentrate on 'the details' so much and further mixtures occur.
There are some middle chassis cars with a mix of panels, some thin some standard. There is at least one early car with parts date stamped back to 71!
The last of the RS programme ( and T E S production) coincided with the not inconsiderable change to the G series cars and the oil crisis so one would imagine a company like Porsche would use up as much of the F series stockpile to the last day of production.
Some of the last few RS cars even had a different crankcase
which had more to do with future rather than current production of the day.
The car in question (like any other) would have to have it's DNA checked to see if it matched the sellers claims and even then it is not an exact science (but it is possible to be fairly certain of most things).
