Spark plug removal - best tool/socket?

Post by Dr. Ferdinand »

In 11 years of 911 ownership, I've always made do with my old socket set, and therefore struggled with the annual spark plug check - are there any off the shelf sockets suitable for the job, or has anyone come across a suitable solution?

I think there is an length-adjustable plug socket extension that I have seen mentioned on here? I could use one myself, I would rather keep the skin on my knuckles this year!

Anyone?

I have one very similar to this. If it's the same, then it 'grips' the spark plug to prevent it dropping down into the tinware

If you can get the genuine Porsche part supplied in the original toolkit it is brilliant - maybe someone will have one at the Hus Crawley event - or place a wanted post on here - maybe you can get one though your local Porsche dealer?

You can't beat that one, also used in most other Porsches, I know the 924 has the same tool and later 911 too.

The one I saw attaches to your rachet handle and slides in length according to which plug you're on?

I found my factory one, the one with the allen key and 'UJ' spring and it is wonderful.
Got mine at H Crawley in 1990.....
The bit of give offered is great for the plug in the LH Front side (#1?)

After some umming and ahhing, I plumped for the wrench from Porsche shop.

Image

Very good indeed but rather too expensive at 60 quid odd, what with vat and shipping. What`s more it had obviously come straight from an OPC so if you`re in the market try them first.

And so under the watchful eye of my apprentice the plugs were changed without any drama.... although at one point when the apprentice was demonstrating number 3, I saw something flit across his face... the slightest of hesitations..... and I knew exactly what he was thinking...... `It would be a lot easier to do these spark plugs with the engine out of the car`

But no, once again, I managed to restrain him. It is inevitable though, sooner or later he`s going to find a valid excuse to part my car from it`s engine.... and reduce it to its componant parts.

Thanks James,

Mike.

Got two of those bad boys in my tool box. Might take a bit of extra care if they're £60!

Well.... I had the caburetors completely rebuilt, the crack in the magnesium manifold welded (thankyou Alan UK), the dizzy rebuilt 3 times, fitted pertronix, removed the pertronix, fitted a new Hardy fuel pump (thanks to Chris Flavell at Fenn Lane), had the car tuned twice at Boggs, changed the engine oil, changed the gearbox oil, fitted another dizzy, had it tuned again...... and fitted new NGK BP7ES spark plugs as recommended by Lightweight 911..... Not necessarily in that order.

I like to think that the cure for my running woes wasn`t entirely down to 15 quids worth of sparkplugs..... but hey, we got there in the end.
