Porsche Typ 64

Saw this in a classic car magazine when I was in Germany last month. It has a full feature on the Porsche Typ 64 built in 1939 and took part in a race from Berlin to Rome
The Writer takes it out on a test ride and there are some good pics.

Ive added a few pics below - i will add a few more in the next day or two plus a bit of a write up.

Three were built for the race, which never took place due to an annoying interruption called the Second World War. One car was crashed and written off by a Porsche driver, one was hacked down into a 'convertible' by American soldiers at the end of the war and trashed, the third survived and was owned/raced by Otto Mathé...

the speedometer is awesome - plenty of brezel (or barndoor /kubel) owning folk with an eye on performance would give a great deal for a similar unit.

Significant point – the Otto Matté car was converted to RHD by Matté as he only had one arm, and drove by leaning against the steering wheel while changing gear with his left arm.

What is sad is that car has been converted to left-hand drive by the current owner, thus destroying the major part of its history...

Keith,

The mathe car was registered with the old registration T2222 wasnt it? But the Mathe car was silver (and RHD) so how come this car is green? Silver was the german racing colour of that time?

Do you know which car this is then out of the three chassis?

I have posted these before, but they are relevant to Mathe. His early Gmund 356 and the Berlin car were at Goodwood some years ago and you can see the mods made to make the 356 RHD. I wish now I had taken more of the race car but it was a wet day see the black plastic bag in the window frame.

He seemed to use the same reg number for different cars.
