Anyone seen 6 CZ ?

Post by MikeB »

Just wondering if anyone knows if this car is still on the road. It was a red 356 A and had the rather distinct registration of 6 CZ. My dad owned it in the late 1960s, and travelled to all parts of Ireland in it on business.
Cheers

Spoke to my dad today and this is the only pic he has of the car

Image

He said the last thing he knew of it, was a phone call from a bloke who had bought it further down the line and it had a broken crank. The new owner was asking if a VW crank could be fitted to it, as back then 1969-ish getting a new Porsche crank was probably going to cast more than the car was worth :( It might even have ended up with a VW engine in it.

But if anyone knows anything of it's life since then, I'd be interested in hearing of it.
Cheers

Hi Mike,

You don't have any more information on the car (like the chassis number, model year, where it was bought from when new, first owner etc) do you?
I can't find anything with that numberplate in the folders but will be able to look it up with a chassis number if you have it or pin it down to certain cars if you have more information.
I assume it was a Super as well with those hubcaps.

Sorry, another question. Is red the original colour?

Hendrick

I'll ask my Dad, I would be surprised if he had a chassis nr, but he might recall some of it's history.

6 CZ is a Northern Ireland reg, so I don't know if it was supplied by Issac Agnew (the Belfast agent) or it was brought over from GB and re-registered.

I also recall that it had a damaged front when my dad bought it and he had it repaired, whether it was resprayed at that point I don't know.

But I'll let you know as soon as he replies
Cheers

Thanks for that. I'm not sure whether it will have come through AFN then or through the Irish importer.

Hendrick,

My father reports :-

It was GB registered and brought to NI by Gordon McNally ( well known in UAC etc ) and the colour was not changed.

Doubt if that helps you too much, but may be of interest

Thanks for that. Do you know if it was a Super or a Normal?
If it was a super it will have said so under the engine lid at the back of the car.
Also you don't have any photos of the rear at all do you? If you do then I will be able to tell if it's T1 or T2 and narrow the search down some more!

Thanks for the info Mike.
You having the year helps a lot and makes the car an AT2. I assume when you say 1959, you mean the model year.
At the moment there are 8 possibles, I will have a look tonight and see if I can reduce it down at all.

Hendrick

The 1959 is probably just the year it was bought, my dad wouldn't be aware of the Porsche MY not being the same as the calendar year

My dad is meeting his friend, who was the previous owner of the car next week, so he'll ask him if he has any other info :)

Complete with the old trangular sticker for crossing the Border!

My 2nd Beetle that I rallied and autocrossed North and South was 8282 CZ....

Happy days!

No, I don't think I had either. Running a competition car on student finances didn't stretch that far! I blew up the 1200 engine on a rally with the QUB team in Co. Wicklow, and was towed back through Dublin and home at night on a solid bar, with no battery left (no lights!) - fairly hairy - and then bought a 1600 engine at great expense, must have been at least £100
Later I bought a damaged 1500 Beetle, and a 356-engined one as well, re-built one as a rally/autocross/autotest car with the 356 engine and several bits from Robert McBurney, and the other as a fast road car for my then girl-friend.

Must have been the right thing to do - she's still with me! :)
