sticky accelerator cable....

914 - 1.7 - twin 38's

firstly: The engine gets quite warm quite quickly (is this normal on type 4 motors ?)

secondly: when its warmed up, the accelerator pedal develops a strange delay !! about 1 second after you depress the pedal the revs pick up ? It makes driving normally quite a challenge...has anyone else had a similar issue or have any ideas about what this could be ?? All the linkeage on the carbs is tight and good, and operating the revs from the engine end is fine..could it be a stretched or worn cable ?

Hi Mark,

bit of an odd one that.... I have a 914 2.0L and it takes approx 10mins to warm up, but I have a deep sump kit, so there is an extra 1.5 L of oil to warm up! So long as the engine doesn't overheat, then you have no problem there.

As for the accelerator issue, it sounds like as the engine warms up, your cable is snagging or your throttle linkage is binding. I'm afraid it's hard to diagnose something like this, but as the engine gets hotter it expands and this expansion may be causing the linkage to bind. Do you run with return springs so that the throttle snaps shut when you take the foot off the gas? Maybe these are binding or catching on something when you put your foot down...???!
