Mileometer / Odometer, MOT etc

My Mileometer in my 71 911 appears to not work. Speedo works, it just doesn't clock up any miles. I can see the good side but need some advice.

1) Will this lead to MOT failure? It is not a safety issue but Mileage is recorded on MOT's. Any advice would be helpful

2) I undertand this is a common fault. I have a description of how this can be repaired but are parts available?

3) If I decide against attempting this myself, any recomendations would be helpful?

Great if you've got limited milage insurance!

I don't think its compulsary for milage to go on the MOT certificate.

Just spoke to my friendly MOT garage and a working mileometer is a requirement of the MOT. However a lot of garages only take the mile reading so if you can see the numbers you may be lucky.

Only obvious if you take the old MOT certificate in with you !! I tried two speedos like that till I found a good one !

exactly, potentially its only going to crop up when/if you flog it!

As strange as it might sound, I don't think instrumentation checks are part of the MOT - not even the speedo. The only exception is the ABS warning light (if you have one). But I could be wrong - I am just a girl after all!!!

I doubt any, with exceptions of the most pedantic MOT centre would notice, for a start they'd have to take you car for a spin to notice and for £25-30 they're gonna want it off the ramps asap for the next punter.

Lets face it, its not the speedo its the rust in the structural parts you're gonna have to worry about

Thanks everyone for the replies. My main concern really is that I do have a limited mileage insurance and am concerned that a fault such as this could lead to a void policy in the event of a claim. You know what insurance companies are like, any possible little reason bla, bla, bla.....

If this is an MOT failure point, I will ask the garage from where I bought the car to repair it as it's still at the point of where the last MOT was noted, and never worked since I collected the car. However, the garage claim that it is not an MOT issue. I therefeore need something official to contest this. The only resource for MOT's I could find is:

Though this is a very good resource, I could find nothing concerning the Mileometer (though I may well have missed it)

bjmullan, would you be kind enough to ask your friendly MOT Garage to point me to where this is officially stated?

I assuming I can't live with problem, do people recommend I change the mileometer or repair it? Should I attempt this myself or have it done by a specialist?

cubist, Given the large amount of water falling from the sky lately, 58 will probably be repeated. Ironic that in this instance, excess water causes drought

This might be a bad choice of words for a question to you lot but do you think I'me being unecessarily cautious regarding the limited mileage insurance?

I have taken a few of these speedo's apart now, it is relatively easy. Once you have carefully prised the peened edge of the bezel back , the rest is easy. There is a gear that wears out, well it was in my case, If you can get spare ones of these, then the fix is relatively easy. You could perhaps get hold of an kph unit and swap the bits over... It is worthwhile cleaning the old grease off and re greasing the spindles whilst there, 'cos once it dries out these units can't half screech !

Thanks for this, it's better than the instructions I have and will prove extremely useful should I attempt this myself

In my experience, however, it was not the gun-metal gear wheels becoming loose on the shaft, as described in the article..... If you do need a hand, get in touch, Leicestershire isn't that big ! I'm just round the back of Leicester Forest East services.....
