Removing the generator

Hi guys,

I need to remove the generator to replace the pulley hub and replace the brushes (at least I think I do?).

Couple of questions:

1. Can I do this with the engine in the car?

2. If so, how much/what else do I need to remove to get the generator out?

I have the 356 workshop owners manual, and the elfrink book - is there anything else I should know about removing the generator before I start?

Hi James,

To remove the generator:

Disconnect the cables.
Undo the front pulley and remove the fan belt.
Undo the bolts holding the oil filter housing bracket to the fan shroud and the strap on the filter. This enables you to....
Remove the 4 bolts holding the generator plate on the fan housing.
Undo the strap holding the generator onto its stand.
Undo the 2 nuts and 2 bolts on the generator stand.
Now you should now be able to slide out the generator and the stand.

Thanks for your instructions Paul. They are very clear and hopefully I'll be sorted now. I'm planning on giving this a shot in the next day or so time permitting, so I report back here on my progress.

Ok, first stupid question

It looks like I need to remove the oil filter, or at least move it out of the way so I can remove the oil filter housing bracket, and thus the generator plate on the fan housing.

Can I safely disconnect the top line from the oil filter without risking any damage or spreading oil all over my engine?

Also, is it necessary to remove the generator stand in order to get the generator out?

Well I have the generator out and it is now at the shop getting the old pulley hub removed, bearings replaced, brushes replaced and a general clean up.
