When I got my 356, it was running ( or rather, had in it!) a VW engine, with alternator, and no original gauges. I do remember that the wipers worked, though !!!!!;-)
Anyway, now I have a 912 engine, and original style clocks. I have made a custom oil and petrol gauge out of a VW 12v fuel gauge and a 12v 912 oil gauge which I got some years ago at a parts jumble, and put these into the body of a non working 356 combi- gauge.
So, what else do I need to look into to run a 12v battery? I did turn the VW engine over whilst it was in the 356 using the starter in the car- that seemed to work ok:roll: The wipers also seemed fine on a 12v. Lighting wise can I just put in 12v bulbs for the gauges and main lighting/indicators etc?
It looks like to run the rear lighting and VW engine, the main loom running to the rear was replaced with coloured single core copper wire (!) so I have obtained a 2nd hand loom to replace the single core stuff with. How did the main loom run through the middle of the car? was it in the tunnel, or, like now, running loose on the side of the floor ( am guessing through the tunnel)?
Rear lights- I can remember needing to adapt them into UK spec, what was all this about ?
Any help greatly appreciated !

Re the rear light conversion.
Originally the rear lights took 2 single filament bulbs the inner one for the tail light and the outer for indicator and brake light. These days that would confuse the hell out of most drivers, so what you do is replace the inner socket with a dual filament one so you can use it for a tail/brake light. You also need to run an extra wire directly from the master cylinder switch to the socket for the brake lights. I got socket for my A from P. R. Services.
