Camber compensator

Post by 40 scout »

I'm havin loads of fun driving my 356 at the moment -

Thinking of going for a camber compensator from Vic Skirmants for the rear - (along with a set of Koni's), got new set of Boges at the mo and there quite soft - everything else is new, bearings, trackrod ends, steering dampner etc..

The car handles really well, iike a cart - but a little soft maybe.

Has anyone driven a car fitted with the compensator? (not the factory one)

Preferably driven the same car before fitting.

Cheers all

Sadly not but would love to hear about it...would they also work on a vw rear too?
My rear is a bit gassed up - what were the konis you have? are they specific for the 356 or off the shelf ones?

off topic, but any pics of your Indian ;-)
Contact me if you have any 356b coupe parts !!!!

A long time ago fitted a camber compensator on a swingaxle '61 beetle. I can't really remember how much it improved the handling .... I do remember it reduced wheel tuck

I've got a new set of Boges at the moment - I assume the Konis are made just for the 356 as I don't think other shocks will fit.

Will post a pic of my Indian soon.

Apparently the Skirmants camber compensator makes a big difference - I've seen a couple of Emroy cars advertised with Em fitted - must be a good ref surely - they do a street one or race.

Will prob take a flyer and treat myself.

Anyone else?

I have a CC on my swing axle bug.

I think it works well combined with an uprated front anti-roll bar :) .

I did look at a 356racecar once in Canada which had an acomplished race history.
The owner ...who built the acomplished history... had a camber compensator free with the car ..."only used once and didnt add to the times" ...it was the type you mentioned . He did have racing friends who thought they were great.
All that said he had a pretty novel approach to wheel tuck I'd not seen before or since . If I can find a picture I'll share it .

I'd go with a good set of shocks and tweek the setup and if you are really on the edge needing .05 secs per lap extra it might be worth looking at.
Cheers

I too had one on a beetle and it made a big difference, Swayaway with fat front anti roll bar, I will be doing the same to the 356 when I get it on the road.

356 Suspension Changes

Post by Mike Smith »

Steve,

I will happily sell you a Skirmants Camber Compensator (we have them In Stock) but slowly, slowly is the answer with any changes

1) - Make Sure that the Suspension Geometry is Set Up Correctly - Front & Rear - (Off the centre Line of the Car)
2) Good Shocks - on a soft setting
3) Good Engine Mounts (Or our Harder ones)
4) Harder Rear Torsion Bar Bushings (NOT Plastic)
5) Larger Front Anti Roll Bar with Harder Bushings (NOT Plastic)
6) Skirmants Bar
7) Larger Rear Torsion Bars
8) Cut the hoop and Extend the Front Torsion Bar Adjustment Slot

This is the approx. order of approach, depending what you are really trying to achieve

Engine Mounts and all Rubber Bushings are made specifically for us - They are Rubber and are NOT plastic
