I have been considering moving into Porsche ownership for a little while now and came across this site. Have read a fair bit on here and really fancy an early 911 but not sure I can afford one so may go for a 912 unless I buy one needing some fairly major restoration work.

I have been into VW's for a few years now and have just sold the 1956 single cab after restoring it. Couple of pics of the VW's I have owned. Karmann has also been sold so I now have a space in my garage.



I am in Essex near Southend and would be interested in knowing if anyone on here could recommend some restorers in my area if there are any. Also it would be good to get some first hand advice on buying one. I have no problem in doing work myself but would want any welding done by a specialist.
Are there any meetings planned where I could look over some cars coming up in the near future?

there is a big Porsche event June 7 at Castle Hedingham which is the main early (pre 73) event of the year - certainly worth popping along to see a wide selection of early cars.

Knowing what I am like I would think I may have something by then. Just got to make sure I amd careful what I buy.

My budget is about £10k but having read a good few threads on here whatever I go for will certainly need a fair bit of work.

Is a 912 more of an option and if so what sort of condition could I expect for the money I have to spend.
I am just having a vw type 1 2054cc engine being built. I believe this is the same engine style of engine as fitted in the 912. Is that correct? If so engine would not be a problem.

for £10k you could get a pretty good 912. where as a 911 for £10k is going to need serious restoration.

After finding a car I then couldn't get the finances together but then another car came along at a cheaper price which I have now had about a month.

It had a very poor paint job and rust in the front box section but other than that it is really solid. I had the front box section and tank support replaced and decided to have a go at painting it myself, never done this before. One month of weekends later it now looks like this.






It had been sitting in a garage for 4 years and somehow the pedals had seized up. The previous owner had thought the clutch had seized but a set of bushes in the pedals sorted that out.
Engine wasn't running too well but it now ticks over and seems to be getting better each time its run, maybe down to the carbs being a bit clogged up from 4 years of not being used.
Just need to sort out the electrics, indicators don't seem to work but think thats down to the hazard switch, and then it will be ready for an MOT.

After all this effort, 1 week after buying it I was offered a job in Australia and now may need to sell. I really want to keep it after putting a lot of effort in but may have no choice.

Welome to the forum. When I got my car the lights were dodgy, the windscreen wipers too. Turned out the car had been sat and the fuses and connectors were a bit furry. A general going over with fine wire wool sorted it out, no problem at all.
