Hi guys, I'm looking to put a realistic value on my 356 engine with a view to selling it. Any estimates on what its really worth? Its a 1956 1600 normal with single barrel stock carbs. stock bore. runs nicely, no oil leaks. doesnt rattle. needs exhaust (its currently fitted in my beetle). newish 050 dizzy.
Just bought two running 60hps less carbs on one and exhaust on the other. £1250 for the first and £850 for the other... not surprisingly, one pessis oil everywhere. Unfortunately it was the more expensive of the two
Hi
shrapnel is not worth very much so well used engines which are complete unkown quantities are worth very little and early motors are only of any real interest to people with early cars where as later C and 912 motors will go in any 356 without doing its value or driveability any harm at all. I thought that Ebay engine was good value as it was being sold by Nick Faure a very long term 356 enthusiast although the fact he had sod all feedback did not do him any favours, even a fairly basic rebuild would cost more than that.
yours Bill.
I am a person of simple pleasures so if you don't have any simple pleasures to offer me, beer, pizza or Porsche bits etc kindly leave me be, XX.
Thats right, its a well running engine that can be heard and seen running, not a bomb waiting to go off... But of course its an early engine, with the small carbs, and not a 912 motor, swings and roundabouts... I guess if its an early car you're looking to keep authentic its ideal, If you have a C that you want to boot around, youre better off with a later engine. I certainly don't drive this engine like I do the C, its a different beast.
to be honest Damon I don't know why you want to sell it. You have toyed with selling the engine anumber of times over the years I have know you. It's a nice power plant in the early beetle I would just enjoy it. Much better than the orginal unit. It runs well leaks little oil and should last many 1000's more miles.
I know what you're saying.. But I've kept that car for 10 years and hardly driven it, Its a waste and I'm paying for the garage. I've spoken to Dave Clark about getting the samba finished and a sale would make that less painful. We can only drive 3 cars at once after all.
