I had one for a couple of years - expensive to maintain (as there were so few of them, nobody seems to have a really good handle on sorting engine related issues out when it's not running quite right and they used a cross-over / hybrid fuelling & ignition solution that lost the simlicity of the 930, but wasn't a patch on the 3.6 version that followed); very thirsty around town (low teens) and not great on a run either; laggy (but weren't they all pre the 993?); felt very tail heavy and was sensitive to suspension settings (would punt you all over the road on lift off, even in a straight line, due to 100% diff lock under such circumstances) if not set up correctly.
The above said mine had the most amazing stopping power, was hugely quick once on boost, very comfortable and eerily quiet on long trips - great fun if you have deep pockets, but not one to go for if you want cheap(er) Porsche motoring.
The guy that bought mine promptly pulled one of the head studs and faced a big repair bill, but I have no idea how he managed it as these cars are generally bullet proof.

that might have been due to some flat out runs on the private road that has a name very similar to the A1 ( & no it was not me )Ian Donkin wrote: The guy that bought mine promptly pulled one of the head studs and faced a big repair bill, but I have no idea how he managed it as these cars are generally bullet proof.

I hope this doesn't sound contrary, but I had one (a '91 model as well) and ran it without any problems at all for almost 2 yrs. It was my only car, so did the daily commute mainly, but also did a trip to Belgium and also Cannonball 8000 down to Monaco and back - with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I didn't find it any dearer to maintain than the 993 C2 I'd had before it, and didn't have any probs with servicing. Not sure where you live, but I'm in Kent and used La Rose Porsche in Kemsing. They share premises with Paul Devyea (who does the sales side - in fact the 964 Turbo was the second 911 I'd bought from him). I'm now back in a 3.2 after a few cars in between and will be going back to La Rose for all servicing altough I bought the car elsewhere.
They are a bit heavier on the fuel, but around town (and mine mostly did daily commute remember) I would get 20 - 22mpg. Gave a bit more on a run, but not a lot. Yes, if you boot it then it will come down, but I rarely went below high teens.
Yes there is turbo lag - I think that is one of the most defining parts of it's character though. Personally I loved it - put your foot down, here the turbo whizzing, then... B A N G ! ! ! It was superb!!!
They are eerily quiet on the motorway - totally agree. Made the car seem all the more menacing to me Just purring along, squeeze the throttle, gentle hissing noise from turbo, then licence-losing territory! Amazing.
We cruised most of France at about 125mph - I wouldn't do it these days, and only mention it to illustrate how amazing the car is for cross counrty blasts. Best I had was 165mph, and I was very relieved to get back down to more sensible speeds and keep my licence. But the car was rock steady at that speed. Mine was one of the 'cheapest' cars on the Cannonball Run - we were following £100k+ Lambos/ Ferraris etc. and yet every evening two or three people would come over and say how they'd followed us that day and loved the car. Had some superb blasts thru' tunnels in the Alps with a Delta Integrale and M3...mine had larger factory sports exhausts fitted and sounded very good.
As you can probably tell, I loved that car and would be very tempted to buy it back if it ever came on the market. Last I heard it went off to Wales somewhere...
Anyway, if you want more info then by all means PM me, but I would say get the car checked over, if it all stacks up then buy it. I guarantee you will love it. More to the point, if you don't buy it you'll always be telling the story of how you "almost bought a 911 Turbo once..." and wishing you had!

That 550 rep does look lovely - very lovely! Honestly, there is something about owning a 911 Turbo though.
And when you come to sell it you shouldn't lose that much money either. Test drive one and see what you think. I wish I had mine still and I'd take you out for a spin. Whereabouts are you? If you're near London/ Kent then I'd give Paul Devyea a call as he has them in occasionally. I've bought two cars from him and both were very goood with absolutely no problems.

If you want a turbo, you should go for the 993, it's an amazing car and will keep it's value very well in all countries - though it will also cost a lot more.
Personally, I like the look the 550 replica

Mine was in a rather special blue colour - will try and post a pic if someone can explain how I do it?!? There were (apparently) only 8 in the UK of that colour, plus it had Speedlines, so really looked the dog's danglies.
I know what you mean about red - tricky one. Can look very good, but I think a car as special as the Turbo really can comfortbaly carry off some slightly whackier colours. The "mint green" that you could get the 3.6 Turbo in was superb...

Ok - thanks Bootsy - let's see if this works! If it does, then here is a link to my old 964 Trubo II.
