Need a jack handle

Hi guys,

I have the original jack for my car, but have found I'm missing the jack handle! Any suggestions for getting hold of one of these - doesn't have to be an original 356 jack handle - any old bar that fits will do.

I've looked on ebay on the off chance that an old VW jack handle might fit, but there don't seem to be any going in the UK at the moment.

I think you can just use a length of (from memory 10mm diameter) steel bar.

I'm guessing that you need this for practical rather than concours reasons?

Its probably not the best idea to use the original jacking points on your car to actually jack it up - according to guys like Jim Schrager at least(you must buy his 356 book if you havent already!) - the advice being that you carry a decent scissor jack and a pad (or a lightweight trolley jack) to jack the car by the front cross member or transmission hoop only.

For my C I just carry some tyre repair foam and no spare, no jack. He said tempting fate enormously..I am thinking about one of those pretty Clarke racing jacks, though..

Ah! Right you are. I've just read http://www.356registry.org/tech/jacking.html and it looks like it's off to Halfords I go for a scissor jack.

I carry a Porsche 944 lightweight alloy scissors jack - you can often find them on ebay (I paid £10).

Good idea, there's one on ebay at the moment I'll keep an eye on. Did you have to make some sort of adapter plate for it?

Hi all,

I'm think of bidding on a 944 scissor jack (there are a few on ebay at the moment) but was wondering if I'll need some sort of adapter plate to use with the 356? Anyone have any experience with this?

I presume you mean to use in the existing jack hole.?

yes you'll need an adaptor plate but if you carry a bit of wood to spread the laod you can put a scissor jack under the car.

And I still haven't forgotten about that jack handle! just been too busy and have a lock-up rather than an attached one.

I have a sissor jack i bought from B&Q years ago and it seams to lift the car well and secure it's in the 912 and I have only used it the once.. other than that RAC card

The article I read over at the registry suggests jacking the car by the tranny hoop at the back or under the vertical bulkhead at the front rather than using the original jack points.

I know your pain! Oh for an attached garage with space for a workbench and some tools!
