What tools spares for my 356?

Hi guys,

I'm picking up my 356 soon (hopefully this weekend) and was wondering what tools and spares I need to kit the car out with for peace of mind driving?

Also, my car is 6v and the previous owner suggested I get a spare battery to keep in the car in case I ever have trouble starting it. I've seen guys on the 356 registry talking about Optima batteries - are they as great as they make out and is anyone selling them in the UK?

I guess in terms of spares / tools to carry with you

Jack / wheel brace / fan belt / shims for fan belt pulley / dynamo spanner / WD40 / general tools / mobile phone!

You can buy optima batteries here in UK - no experience with them personally but I'm sure someone else here on DDK will have.

When it was running I never had any trouble at all starting with the 6v, but then again it didn't sit too long between start ups

probably why it looks like it does now

The list depends mainly on how far you are driving. The other things I always take with me on any journey are oil and a foot pump. I have run 6 and 12 volt on different cars and had no problems (so far). I have never used the Optima batteries, but have just gone for a quality one i.e. Bosch.

Hi James - re batteries, I use my 356A (6v of course) once or twice a week and never have any problems starting it, so it may not be as bad as you think.

Re tools - I'd call Paul at PR Services and he can probably sell you the right toolkit they would have had when new.

James, I doubt Paul will have an original toolkit for an A for sale, they are pretty rare. Even if he did I wouldn't recommend using it - have you seen how much they go for now.
Just have a set of metric spanners and an assortment of screwdrivers along with the pulley wrench of course.

Sorry - what I meant is you could buy the right size spanners etc., I didn't mean an "original" toolkit. I bought my A from Karmann Konnections and it came with a new toolkit with all the right pieces. If you get stuck then give them a call. Ritchie (who owns the business) is a very helpful and knowledgeable guy and I am sure this is a stock item for them. Comes in a lovely pouch too - all looks splendid!

KK do a lot of mail order and their products are often featued in Porsche mags. They're very good.

I think Mike from PRS (UUL442) has replica tool kits for around £500 depending on what car you have.
We take Visa, Mastercard, American Express and PayPal.

A couple of the guys added to this after me and they were sensible comments, I should have up-dated the list

With regard to tools – YES we can always put a Very Nice Tool Kit together for you and can tailor it to fit your pocket (Financial that is) but there are some tools that you MUST Carry

If You Carry Nothing Else make sure you:-

1. Know how to change a Fan Belt (Practice if you have never done it)
2. Carry a Spare Fan Belt (The Correct One)
3. Carry a Generator Spanner
4. Carry a Means of Jamming the generator

5. Carry a good Spare Wheel
6. Carry a Jack
8. Carry a GOOD Wheel Wrench

8. Buy a Drivers handbook (It has all the information to allow someone else to help you – i.e. the RAC Man)

Thanks to everyone who has replied!

I now feel like I know what I need to get. That link to the 356 Touring list is invaluable - perhaps that should be made sticky somewhere?

I'm going to sort out a wee shopping list over the weekend and start assembling a kit to put in the car. Looks like I'll be giving you a call next week Mike
