New 912E Arrival!

Post by DanG »

Hi All!

Just registered and preparing you all for the onslaught of 'stupid' questions with regard to my newly acquired 912E

Currently in California – parked on a dock – awaiting the start of its voyage to Tilbury.

Rust free, and mostly original apart from the butchery which has gone on with the injection system!

Project will be to rectify or replace with Weber conversion (sorry!)

Based in Hampshire and will be looking for a specialist for help fix it when i break it!

also need to convert headlamps including the surrounds - replacing with chrome ones.

Pictures when it arrives in about a months time

Good work Dan, 912e must be in double figures now in the UK.

You may find it difficult to replace the FI as alot of the 912e's induction is specific to that model. 914s run a slightly different setup, unless you want it to be totally original 914 FI might be the only option. I removed the FI on my 912e for a pair of DRLAs, main problem with standard 912e FI is its inability adjust for changes in cam and other horsepower gaining mod's. Megasquirt might be a better option and there is plenty of knowledge on here about that.

JH and Der Fudgemeister are the 912e guys here, there are others and ex owners (myself)

You might be better off with a VW specialist if you break it engine wise as alot of Porsche specialist have probably never seen one before.

Post some pictures when you can.

Sorry mis read your post thought you were ditching the carbs for Efi.

I'd use Dellorto if you can, all parts are available in the UK for the conversion. The manifolds in some of the kits are abit poor and can crack easily (PM JH and he'll give you the low down). Personally I'd source a pair of Del DRLA 40s, CB Performance linkage and filters, rotorary pump (no need for fuel regulator) and CSP manifolds. You'll need to fabricate a bracket to secure the throttle cable, blank off a couple of fuel return pipes. New harness for the fuel pump as the existing wiring requires info from the ECU to continue power after the engine is started.

try

Headlights where via Ebay, NOS, but you can guy them new from places like Type911 for about £100 each. Ride height is how it arrived in the UK when I bought it. It had 14" fitted, like your I then fitted with 16" fuchs, which will fill the arches. Yours looks to have its height higher than standard, US cars often seem to have a higher ride for some reason.

If you want to see the work I did on the 912e have a look here, you'll see the carb conversion too.

Excellent, another 12E to the UK. They do look good in white.

What's the problem with the 'butchered FI'?

it would seem that the FI has been removed, although the parts kept in a box and i have most. I suspect the reason for removal was some type of failure.

So....

the FI has been replaced with a single central carb, and four very long intakes...! runs fine, but far from ideal.

first job after a check of the body work will be a twin carb replacement (siting over the heads -not in the middle)

air pump and hoses to the thermal reactors are also missing... but not sure i need to worry about those??

Hey Dan, have you got a pic of the engine bay?

Wondering if it's got a carb on the original plenum or if it's had a bus intake system installed. There's tuning theory with intake length.

Keep hold of all the FI stuff, megasquirt is very cost effective. Air pump & reactors are nowt to worry about. Neil
