914 Resto (Stage 1)

Post by pillay2k »

I started this thread in the 914 section sometime ago but will update on this post from now...
Just a quick recap... it was meant to be a little patch here and a quick respray for the summer.... but university and Formula Student got in the way... As of this morning it looked like this...!!! (see below)
My car seems to get worse the more I poke but it should be a pristine example soon enough (with a lot of help for my Dad). Spent today making a new exhaust heat shield to replace the previous bodge. Dad is fixing a previously bodged door too. Why do some garages do such poor work, especially supposed 'Porsche Specialists'! Oh well there won’t be much filler on this when it’s done...
Anyway, picture is a thousand works and all that...

Have you decided what colour to paint it yet? In your previous post it was going to be either orange or black?

Going with Phoenix Red, L32K is the cars original paint code. I was thinking of signal orange but there are quite a few orange '14's around...

Latest update... Cutting out the rust at the bottom of the fuel tank valley, now repaired, will get some pics. Stripping off the underseal to uncover some horrors and then repairing... Making up the internal cross brace today and cutting out and replacing the previous floor repair. Last pic is getting filler of a bodged door.... no joke it was about 15mm thick ALL OVER!!

Keep at it

you may have a point about there being too many orange '14's! Mind you there weren't any at Heddingham last weekend (one day, I'll bring my car out!)

1972 914/6 GT replica - 2.7 - signal orange.

Whoop whoop!!

Finally getting somewhere... After much scraping of underseal, welding of holes and fabricating of panels/ patches i have a solid base to the car!

Cant wait to get the wheel wells done and the car back on the ground and get the bodywork done.

Still got primer, underseal and body colour paint to go on the underside but it will all be worth it. (this is the fist coat of POR-15)

First couple of pics of the rustproof coat. Came out pretty nice, is as hard a glass though... will take a while to flat it back for primer...
I will be very happy if the colour comes out this shiny and smooth from the gun!

Just finished the passenger side wheel wells, pics to follow. drivers side and interior areas to do starting next week.

We have done a huge amount of work to the body, looks a lot better than it was thanks to some serious fabrication, welding and lead loading... 8)

Cant wait to get it done... think i may have missed the summer by then... but the deadline is still september as i am back off to Bath to finish my masters...!

Update.
Back on wheels of some description (9" 914 steels banded by my dad about 23 years ago... still hold air!!)
Underside is now primed, going to add wurth underseal to the centre section of the floor then prime and paint. Wheel arches are just a prime and paint.
Have been working on the cockpit and rear boot. was just going to just tidy and paint but as usual got carried away (was going to leave the tar on the floor..glad i didnt!! ((see pic))) and went back to bare metal and have now painted POR15 black. This will then get primed and painted... shame no-one will ever see it under the carpets...
Can't wait to get on to the body work and start splashing some colour!!

Update for my last few days activities...
Primed the inside. Filled the outside. Removed the front suspension for cleaning and restoration.
Also fashioned a rig to paint the underside of the car.... its quite stange having a 914 floating in mid air in the garage...
We can get the car pretty high, which should mean less painting lying down... 8)
