Which oil

Just wondering which oil people are using in their 911's. Does anyone have a specific favourite when comparing price vs performance.

I have used nearly everything in my car

At the moment I'm using Valvoine VR1 Racing 20/50 mineral oil which I am liking, but I think next time I might drop back to a 10/40. Unless I'm really working the car hard the oil pressure stays a little bit on the high side for me ( about 1/2 bar higher than I would expect ) which I think has contributed to a new oil leak on my cam boxes

. BUT it does seem very stable temp & pressure wise when I'm thrashing the car along

My favorite so far has been Mobil1 10/40 ( if thats the correct grade ?? )

I have used Silkolene ProR 15/50 and might move back to that next oil change.

Everyone has their own opinion on oil

Oil have to have a think about that, but Ive been told for most 'normal' driving its sensible to use 20 -50 mineral oil. Halfords call it Classic motor oil and sell it for about £ 15 for 5 litres. An early 911 needs about 9 litres. Synthetic or semi synthetic might leak a bit.
The handbook just says use premium grade HD oil.

you need more than 9 Lts if you have a front oil cooler. I initially put 10 ltrs into mine then add more as required ( usually an extra 1.5 depending on how much stayed in the lines when it was drained)

Always used Castrol RS 10W-60 in my 2.4. Great smell too when hot.

I use Castrol RS 10W-60 as well.. It's now called Castrol 'Edge Sport' though I think.

Once again thanks for the advice. My oil pressure at the moment is very good so It was interesting what you had to say about leaks James.

I think the oil leak was going to happen anyway

But just for info with the 20/50 .. when my temp is normal 3500 rpm = 4 bar , 4000rpm = 4.5 bar

When I'm working the car hard & the temp lifts then 3500 rpm = 3.5 bar , 4000rpm = 4 bar ..... which is how I like it.

Previous 'lighter' oils have given the above 'high temp' pressure readings at normal temps & then the pressure ( if I remember correctly ) has dropped a little as the temp has risen

HD SAE30 oil, just as per the handbook. Still nothing to beat it on early air-cooled engines!

Matt,

I have used the Classic from Coma, and it worked fine. Now the car has Valvoline Racing 10 - 40 and it works fine.

Keep to mineral oil.
