I just use type4 gaskets - available from (most) any motor factor.

Watch yourself though - I got asked for over £10 incl VAT by one place locally, just before I said thanks anyway, turned and walked out.

Your VW dealer and Porsche dealer will have them or be able to get them too - and they can be surprisingly good on prices sometimes.

different shape to a type IV I think, 914 might be but I think 912e are different. When Turbo Thomas made the system for my 912e he had to weld on different flanges (type IV) onto the heat exchangers.

I bought some 914 gaskets thinking they were 912E numbers, but oh no.

As far as I am aware you can search the US parts sites for 912E numbers and you might get lucky, or you buy the copper numbers from Jake Raby. I have these but still have to us a high temp sealant. Jake will blame your mating surfaces though.

Personally I'm not sure, but they do allow me to take the system apart and put it back together when I please.

If you're nice and send me an email, I'll look the one's I bought out, I am coming back to Blighty over xmas and back for good in January time. Not decided whether I'll bring my brown E though. I have a good friend who could offer a good home here in Texas

I managed to get something close on a Sunday morning at the local motor factors. Needed to move the holes but they work well.

Rick it's just new paint, I treated it when I had the sensor bung installed. I'll replace the whole lot eventually as it’s a lot weight to be hanging from those poor heads with the stock set-up.

there should be some brackets that support the heat exchangers to the heads so they're not just hanging there on the manifold studs. I also used two off the shelf rubber mounts/rings fitted up to home made brackets that took some weight at the flanges shown in your pictures, the brackets then mount onto the fat bumper dampers.

Question... still on topic i think... my E is running a standard VW type4 engine (VW heads not Porka). It therefore has type4 bus exchangers etc. I want to replace the back box as it a) hangs too low b) is too bloody noisy!

Given that the kosher 912E item a) won't fit and b) are like hen's teeth in this neck o' woods :( , would it be feasible to get a custom item made up with appropriate flanges etc?

Nige, i think you may be the man to answer this one!

Hi Boz

All I can think of is that you give Turbo Thomas a buzz, all his type iv exhausts use bus flanges, the custom setup that was on mine had bus flanges. Worth a call at least for a chat. Get the car to him and he'll put that muffler and pipe exactly where you want it
