C.V. Joints

Post by Barry »

One of my C.V. (Driveshaft) joints has failed: just got me home, but was not very happy.

It's proving almost impossible to sort out which one it is (other than something on the offside), but whether it's inner or outer I can't tell. If pushed I'd say (and expect) that the outer one is where the noise seems to come from roughly, but the inner one has the most play. This is with the car jacked up and running.

Anyway, are the inner C.V. joints the same as the outer ones? If so, I could just order one joint and all C.V. boots, and take both driveshafts down, in the knowledge that I've got a chance of fixing them all in one shot, but knowing I might have to order some more joints when all of the grease is out (if that makes sense).

So, are they the same, and where's the best place to get them??

Many thanks :) .

Thanks James: I'll phone Matthew in the morning, and get an order in.

You've obviously made it home O.K.: I limped mine back, all ran perfectly except for the driveshaft, so I'll see what deal Matthew can do on either one or two joints, plus a set of gaiters 8) .

I had mine rebuilt by Dave Mac propshaft services in Coventry £55 per (Genuine GKN) joint including a gaiter. Call John McMahon on 02476 683239, proper back street place, but an expert and the kind of guy that identifed the part number and joint type on sight :)

I used them to make up custom driveshaft and props whilst I was at Prodrive, highest quality and great service.

They are standard size joints so no need to pay Porsche prices :)

Hi Barry

There are 2 types of cv joints, my car has the earlier type (pre 1971) which operate over a larger range, these have a wider cv joint housing (40mm) and are near impossible to find, the later ones are still available new. Your car should have the later type (32mm) but it may be worth checking as the two different types can not be interchanged.

Hope that helps

Thanks John and Gary.

Gary, I'll give your chap a ring tomorrow, and see if he can help me. I'm being told that the 4-bolt, 32mm is dealer-only if you just want a joint, and am seriously considering buying a whole replacement driveshaft in order to break it into the individual parts, so that I can spread the best bits into the areas that need them most (if that makes sense).

Anyway, would much rather buy one or two individual joints, plus a set of gaiters ...

I'll let you know how I get on :) .

The 4 bolt CV joint is nothing special, it is just a 6 bolt CV joint with two large roll pins where the other two bolts go.

All I did with mine was knock the pins out of the original joints and knock them into the new ones! :)

It depends which year joint you use, when porsche went from the 4 to six bolt joint they actually made the bolts smaller, M8's instead of M10's. Porsche didnt switch back to the M10's untill 1985. So if your going to use a six bolt joint it needs to be the later type.

911 CV Joint Bolt, 10x48mm, 16 Per Car, 911/912 (1969-73)

911 CV Joint Bolt, 8x50mm (late 1975-early 85)

911 CV Joint Bolt, 10x50mm (late 1985-89)

Gary so did you actually get a 6 large bolt CV to fit your early shaft? ive been wanting to know for some time now if this would work as I need to do this as part of my G50 conversion. I didnt know is the splines were the same.

Barry; I may have two 4 bolt ones surplus to requirements if you get stuck. As stated above I need to swap two of mine for 6 bolt ones. Let me know if you need them.

Steve,

I reused the original bolts, M10 from memory.

So I imagine whatever CV joints DaveMac supplied were 6 bolt, M10, which would make them the later joints. They also fitted on the original shafts.

Sorry it's been a while since I changed them!

Oh dear: I didn't consider that: I phoned them, they said they'd only got six-bolt ones (albeit dated 72-).

I said that they were probably later ones, they said they didn't know.

I ordered a whole driveshaft from Brays as no-one can get a four-bolt any more (main dealer only). Anyway, complete driveshaft is a fortune, but I could see this running and running.

As I've also ordered two C.V. boot kits, I'll then strip the two shafts fitted to the car, and make up one shaft with the best two remaining joints, with new paint, grease and boots.

In theory, that should leave me with an at least usable spare joint, plus I'll know what all of the joints on the car are like.

Thanks for all of the above help folks :) .

Update: well the story continues.

Bray's phoned yesterday, and said 'you know we said we had that shaft on the shelf, and you said can you double check because Matthew at Type 911 said he had them on the shelf when he didn't, and so we said we had checked and we've definitely got one there well we haven't and we can't get one for at least a fortnight and we hope that's all right'. Oh rollox.

So having seen Gary's post above about the later ones fitting, I put the Bray order on hold, and phoned Dave Mac Propshaft, and took a risk on the six bolt (which their book in fact lists as 71- ). To their enourmous credit, the two C.V. joints, and an additional two C.V. boots have arrived already 8) .

They are actually listed as 'Ford BJ-6037 100mm / 25. Very low priced, and with 8mm holes.

Next step is to drop the expired shaft out, and check that the splines will fit. If they do, and assuming that my ones are held by 10mm bolts, I'll open up these holes to match. There's plenty of meat around the holes, so I think that stage will be O.K.

At least at the price of these joints, you feel as though you've not got much to lose: joints 28.18 ea +VAT, with C.V. boot, grease and clips. Driveshaft price from Brays before discounts 282.00 +VAT  .

Update later ....
