Newbie from Silverstone

Post by 911Smonster »

Hi everyone,

I've just stumbled across this forum in the search for a replacement front indicator lens for my beloved 2.4S! As I've owned a few classic 911s over the last 12 years, I thought I may as well join in :)

I've always been attracted to 911s for obvious reasons, particularly early pre-impact bumper cars. But the first 911 I could afford to buy was a '77 Carrera 3.0 It was a good honest car, but a little scruffy around the edges. Still immense fun to drive though and not too expensive to fret over. But I couldn't afford a garage at the time, so it slowly but surely rotted outside on the driveway

A few years rolled by, the garage came, but the slowly bubbling Carrera 3.0 went. I decided I wanted a faster, newer 911 and so I bought a '93 Carrera 2 RS in near perfect condition (5 years old at the time). What a hoot that was! Great trackday car, but not so good on the road. Far too stiff for most UK roads and it gave me a headache if I drove it for more than 30 mins. Although at least I was grinning from ear-to-ear while taking the paracetamol

A few more years later, I decided I could live without a 911 entirely, so I let the RS go (for £23K folks!) and put the proceeds toward a brand new BMW 330Ci. Well it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Wrong!!! Less than 12 months later, I was having 911 withdrawal symptoms and started looking for a nice cheap 3.2 Carrera as a second fun car. But while trawling the classifieds for a 3.2, I finally came across the car I'd always been secretly searching for. An orginal '73 911 2.4S in pristine condition. I realised at the time how rare these beasts were becoming, as I'd rejected several of them over the years. The seller wanted top money for a LHD car, or RHD for that matter! Also far more expensive than a 3.2 Carrera. I had second thoughts, until I actually drove the car. It's not the fastest 911 I've owned or driven, but it sure is the most fun and certainly the most special.

So here she is, my pride and joy:-

So anyway, better sort out that indicator lens.....

Pete.

Pete Welcome to the forum.

Looks like you are looking for some Italian front lenses for your lovely 2.4S.

You will maybe track down a guy on Italian Ebay who sells new (not original unfortunately) repro Italian front lenses. If I get chance I will post a link. Otherwise there are quite a few UK suppliers of repro UK front lenses.

Both my car and James's lovely yellow 2.4S are Italian supplied. We both have switched to UK lenses but I wish I had the original Italian ones. They were thrown in the bucket by the previous owner!!!

All the best

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Just been browsing some of the other newbie posts and there are some fantastic cars in here, especially the other Tangerine ones! Great to see.

Bootsy - Yes I work in F1 as a race engineer, although I've been in charge of the test team for the last few years.

James - I noticed you were a resident over here too, I was reading your excellent thread about Bob Watson. On first impression, this does seem like a better place to discuss the early cars. I've seen links to this site before, but I assumed it was German :sign6:

Mike - Thanks for the advice on indicator lenses. I would ideally like another pair of Italian OEM lenses too. It would be easiest to switch to the standard Euro spec ones like you guys, but as I'm not in a hurry I'll keep on searching. I'll check out the Italian repro ones though. If they're good quality I might go for those.

Cheers,
Pete.

Pete

Your car is really interesting in that you say it is original and it supports all of the facts about Italian delivered cars which make them unique in 1973.

You do not have hazard lights or switch
You have the larger square wing mirror
Front lenses with 3/4 clear and 1/4 orange

and I womder what kind of horns you have lurking under that nearside wing, trumpet or shell type? Would you check and let me know please?

What month was your car delivered to Italy??

These and other minor changes are unique to Italian delivered 1973 cars. James's (Hot 66) is a slightly earlier (Dec 72/Jan 73?) Italian car and I think has the smaller outside mirror.

Thanks

Mike

correct Mike, small flag mirror. I don't have a fetish for horns ;) so keep forgetting to check what type I have

Mike,

Well spotted on the hazards (or lack of!). I'll check the horn and delivery date for you. Think it was very early '73 off the top of my head.

Josh Sadler described it as a "reference" car when he saw it, as it's never been apart or messed about with. I remember being gobsmacked when I came across it in 2002. I drove down to London to view it, half expecting to see yet another disappointing pile of junk. I'm normally pretty detached and unemotional when viewing cars and don't have a problem walking away, but this one turned out to be a bit different! My wife was with me at the time and although she didn't know much about them, she could sense that it was something special. She also sensed that I was desperate to buy it! Which of course I did right there and then.

I'll be interested in your chassis number / build date. I'm trying to find out my exact build date, but Porsche have only told me Jan '73 .... but then also say it was 1st registered 1st Jan '73  I'm trying to find out if my car was possibly manufactured pre Jan '73.

I'll pm you ref chassis number
