Does anyone know if this classic race still exists in any shape or form?
Is there is a Classic Targa Florio event ? If not why not?

Hi Mat,
I've been out to Sicily 3 times now, on a Targa pilgrimage. Even got an article about my trip
to last year's centenary in 911&PW.
In truth, the Sicilians' famous passionate nature is also unfortunately matched by an inability
to get organised. Even for the centenary, it was March before dates and details for any kind
of celebratory events got finalised.
What is run every year, and is well attended, is the Giro Di Sicilia.
The Targa itself was run as the Giro 1912-14 and 1948-50, and instead of using the Targa's well known
(varied length) Madonie circuits, the Giro was a single lap of the entire island!
Carnage back then, but run as a gentlemanly regularity event lasting a week these days.

There are always lots of great cars, although rarely any protoptypes, and there are a handlful of
famous names from the past competing each time (eg. the organisers fly Vic Elford out from Florida as
guest of honour every year).
The Targa itself still lives on as a staged rally, held over sections of the best known Madonie
configuration, the Piccolo:

There are then various historic rallies organised sporadically.
Last year being the centenary there was a bit of a farce, where two competing events were held
on the same week (end May/start June).
The 'official' one even managed to poach Vic Elford from the Giro, much to his confusion!

I have finally finished a short film about the centenary celebrations, but won't have time to author
the DVDs for a month or so... they'll be for sale on the forum once done.

Getting a photo of your car at Collesano hairpin is worth the trip alone:

A few people have asked me about organising a trip to Sicily next Summer.
It's a long schlep, and so would best suit just a small group. Mike ('the dentist') 210bhp is keen,
and Mike (snapper) is taking delivery of a dream car to take...
